Hi, I put the feelers out for some large Whitworth sockets and a guy came up with a toolbox full. In it were the items in the photo.

The large 'teardrop' shaped item with 7/8 is I believe for knocking around nuts/ bolts with a hammer? There are ten or so of these and this is the biggest. Has King Dick on other side.
The brown things I thought were blank go/no go gauges but have no size, etc. Named Vulcan, USA.
Not sure about the orangey thing.

Double-sided throat gauges for measuring metal thickness??? Maybe the size markings are faint enough to be camouflaged by the rust? As you said, they could be go/no-go gauges.

Hi Ton-up. The orange painted tool you have is valve and guide remover for sidevalve E93A Ford engines that powered Populars. Anglias and Prefects in UK in 1940-1950.

I see what you mean, but as a slogging spanner, the part you would hit is too close to the axis of rotation to get much leverage. In addition, it would be a very small striking face: you'd never get a good hammer blow onto it.

One good wack with a sledge hammer to loosen then swap to a normal tool.
Farmers and quarry mantainance guys still buy/use them.
Still made afaik, I had a facom set not that long ago and they were fairly new

I think the idea of it being close to center is to shock the nut free rather than turn it any real distance.

You can use them either way up for tightening or loosening. Or R/H & L/H threads I suppose.

The only time I have seen them used for tightening was by my uncle (a farmer) on the big nuts at the base of his fresh-installed

Here's a LINK. They're calling it a "limit" gauge, which sounds like a go-no-go gauge to me.

Looking at the picture of the bigger and medium of the gauges, they seem to have a line mid-depth of the jaw. Maybe they are unfinished gauge blanks, which would also explain the lack of size written on them.
