Identify turning tool tips

As above,I have a pile ,is there a way of sifting through the useful ones,I fear some are less so as they came from a shop that turned mainly C.I.

Get yourself an engineers black book. There’s a handy section at the back with tonnes of info on tooling. Or look for a chart on Google.

If they are still boxed with a label then just do a Google search for that type number. Should come up with some useful information.

Otherwise just experiment with them. Unless you are running a high volume precision machine centre then "anything goes".

After the above you have the insert 'grade' details, which is manufacturer specific and tells you how tough it is, cast iron, stainless, intermittent cutting and speeds used etc.
