Oh, that reminds me I ought to have a look in there, haven't been in probably since last year or maybe the year before. I've stuck with Pentax because my first film SLR was one and I figured that by sticking with the brand I could re-use all the lenses I bought for it. I have, of course, bought replacements for virtually all of them, but I don't fancy switching to another brand and doing it all over again given how little I'll get for them. It's the usual thing - buy a Pentax lens, and it's expensive because they're not as plentiful as Canon / Nikon ones now, come to sell it and you don't get as much because there isn't the market.Pop over to the pentax forum(they like this place cover other things) some bloody clever photons people there trust me
Back on the original topic, it does seem to vary - I have a Tamron lens that, given the slightest opportunity, will hunt from one end of the focus scale to the other if I lose sight of the bird or plane I was trying to photograph, but my Sigma doesn't do it anywhere near as much. My Pentax has a thing called "catch in focus" or similar, so I can connect a manual-focus lens (or switch into MF), focus on a specific point, and it will sense when the moving object is in focus and take the shot. That's been useful, but I prefer to try to get some motion blur in photos of moving objects to give an impression of speed.
