Welcome to the forum, plenty of helpful folk on hereHi. new here and completely new to welding got an old motamig 160x to learn with, does anyone have an info on these? wiring diagrams etc? also does anyone know if parts are still obtainable? might need a new pot at some point.
Hey, I read your post I think yours is a bit fancier than mine as it has an extra setting, could I ask a question? I know the big switch on the bottom is power, and the middle switch is wire feed speed but what’s the very top pot do? I wasn’t joking when I said I was brand new ha! Thanks for the replies so farEllo, if its anything like mine, solid old english built migs, they dont have anything in them that cant be replaced really, the wire feed pot will be a standard/generic part, dont have a diagram sadly but they're pretty simple, if it works ok as is, i wouldnt worry about it but its worth taking the panels off and cleaning it out if its dirty, checking for any dodgy looking connections while you're in there, have fun!
The layout of your 160x may be different to my 160, post a picture of the front panel and we'll be able to tell you for sure, but on mine, top to bottom the black knobs on the right hand side of the machine are:Hey, I read your post I think yours is a bit fancier than mine as it has an extra setting, could I ask a question? Hi, I’ve not had a proper play with it yet hoping to this Sunday, I think you are correct as the pot clicks off, this is the one where the knob comes off and doesn’t grip the pot properly but it definitely clicks off, can I ask what connector did you use for the earth clamp lead ? That’s a good upgrade as my clamp lead goes directly inside the machine. The layout of your 160x may be different to my 160, post a picture of the front panel and we'll be able to tell you for sure, but on mine, top to bottom the black knobs on the right hand side of the machine are:
Pause/stitch timer at the very top, adjusts the length of time the machine welds for inbetween pauses when its set to spot or stitch welding mode
Middle small knob is a selector to choose between spot/stitch/normal continuous welding
Bottom largest black knob is the wire feed speed
Then under all these theres the red voltage selector switch as you say
I think from seeing pictures of a motamig 160x before on here, they have 2 black knobs (one big and one small at the top) and 1 voltage selector switch, i'd suspect the top one is some sort of weld timer, you can test this by switching the machine on and setting this top small knob to 2 or 3 and pulling the trigger, if the wire feed runs for a second or so then stops, thats what it is, you'll also find this pot probably "clicks off" when you turn it all the way past 0 which takes the timer out of the circuit.
I used a cheap "dinse" style 10-25 connector which are pretty common on welders, easily found on ebay or amazon, and easy to fit.Hi, I’ve not had a proper play with it yet hoping to this Sunday, I think you are correct as the pot clicks off, this is the one where the knob comes off and doesn’t grip the pot properly but it definitely clicks off, can I ask what connector did you use for the earth clamp lead ?
