Any T4 experts?

First 30 miles of a road trip and its broken! Alternator ? 2.4 Caravall R reg, Drove fine Oil light is flashing and Battery light is lit, AA been out could be a broken wire or Alternator as I belive the oil pressure and alternator are connected? Any top tips for diagnostics? If its the Alternator where can I get one tomorrow? Will any others fit?
AA man didnt think it was charging?

Just thank you lucky stars it not a T5 2.5 alternator you need replacing (no belt - driven by cush drive - deep hidden mount plate bolt)

I never had a problem with the 2.4 T4 I had but have had a charging issue with an 02 2.5 T4 on that I just replaced the regulator/brush assembly on the back of the alternator.

There were two different makes and two different current outputs fitted either bosch or valeo then 90A or 120A depending if aircon is fitted

Are you sure it is not the Table in the back resting on the wires ...

Measure the feed/trigger wire to the alt there should be 12v to that on ignition live. If there isn't then there is a wiring issue or the dash bulb has blown. Then measure the bigger red wire when running it should be more than 13v. If it's not then the alt is not working and requires replacement.

Haven't a clue where you could get one tomorrow unless euro or gsf are open.

the wiring to the plug on the alternator can sometimes corrode or chafe through, i have also had the regulator go on mine,
Yes the oil warning light is connected, that system uses a high and a low pressure switches and the rpm feed from the alternator to control the warning light.... because a simple one pressure switch and a light just isnt german enough...
I fitted a mechanical gauge for pressure and temperature, and fixed the warning light with black elekchichens tape

Bit Late but a silly one , the alt / oil light wiring is a silly setup I had issues with my old t4 check all the big strap type fuses by the battery have good connections / are clean it was what was causing the issues with mine but took a long time to diagnose . long shot but worth a check .

Thanks for all your top tips, checked the AA mans work and didn't appear to be charging so giving the fictitious oil fault, as we both suspected.
Fought the bumper and the Massive under tray bolts, removed the Alternator, trip to the scrap yard and 97 Golf gave up its smaller 70 amp alternator , bolted it on and normal service resumed. So I will get the old one overhauled this week and fitted back on.

I repaired mine in without removing the alternator. I'm not sure if its possible to replace the alternator by hinging the front panel forwards, it definitely gives better access to the glow plugs and is relatively easy to do.

Its a Caravelle Long Nose, so bumper, sidelights and under tray and part of grill off AAB engine so I believe that makes some difference?

It does look like the long nose version is different, Ive only ever had the short nose ones, the AAB was also in them
