Defender commercial next time for me then. Might help JLRs sales anyway as they don't offer a pickup.

It all relates to HMRC Vs Coca Cola from 2017. A judge has ruled that as they have a double row of seats they are just as much a car as a van. HMRC have now applied that to all double cabs. Stupid ruling by the judge as they should have taken weight limits into account as you can significantly carry more weight load for good than passengers. I can see further ramifications from this for everything from road fund licence to congestion charges.

You have until July I think to enter into a 3 year lease but then it ends. Will cause a huge shakeup in the market. I suspect crew cab pickups and combi vans will be hard to sell. The manufacturers will come up with mild hybrids which will use more fuel but its all good for the environment apparently

Does this mean that these dual cab (dual purpose vehicles) will loose the dual purpaose status and have to be Class 7 mot tested - instead of the Class 4 they are being tested at now.
Even thou the gross wieght can be over 3000kgs - they tested at Class 4.

Applies to all double cabs bought, new or used, after 1 July 2024.
A concession period to 5 April 2028 for double purchased before 1 July 2024. After that treated as a car.

Most people only get them on lease. I certainly can't afford to buy a half tidy used one. I don't mind going back to driving a big van - more practical and I love the view - it's just they are far too low at the back for towing. Unless I can afford an Iveco 4x4 van on lease

In our trade - you can claim the whole amount in one year for a car - if it used for a hire or loaner (courtesy car). As long as you don't use it for a personal car.
Company car tax has always been a hurdle - and vans that look and drive and have seats like a car - are a car - there is just no getting away from that fact.
Market place will change once again.
Shame as double cab trucks and vans with extra seats - are used for work - by contracting type trades. I see it all the time - van full of workmen going to do some work - now they will be taking two vans.

"A vehicle will not automatically fail this test if it has two rows of seats. There are certain vehicles that have a large/high load area that significantly exceeds the passenger and multi-purpose areas, and are primarily suited for carrying goods or burden."
My Ranger can carry just over 1000kg and has done quite often. It won't carry anything like that with 3 people on the back seat - it's not roomy enough
It has a load bay capable of taking a pallet.
The crazy thing is normal pickups will be allowed. There is nowhere to put anything and keep it dry though. Unless you get a full length truckman top. This mean you will then have restricted headroom and won't get a pallet of earth or a machine in there

If you get given a company car, that is treated as a "benefit in kind" and you pay tax on that benefit (amount depending on what tax bracket you are in)
Goods vehicles are taxed at a fixed (relatively low) rate.
Cars are taxed based on emissions.
Now the rule change means a double-cab pick-up is classed as a car rather than a goods vehicle.
So if you want to drive a 3.0l pick-up around you'll pay BIK tax at the same rate as somebody driving a 3.0l BMW diesel 5 series. (Or more if the truck has higher emissions)
They are still assessed the same way as previously for vat purposes and all other taxes.
So, for somebody like me who uses one for work, or farmers etc it won't make any difference.
In fact, I don't know the numbers but I'd guess there are not hundreds of thousands of people driving them around as company cars anyway?
At least not that many that genuinely need one rather than just having one to take advantage of the tax loophole...
