Steering rack replacment what do i need to know

Long story short car had advisory on thr inner and out steering rack arms

I bought them had them fitted 5 days later steering went hard
Looks like the oil is leaking through the main seals

Is a old car and bloke said I did not damage them installing them but the work done and moving them around could have made the old seals weep and on older cars that might happen

I see where he's coming from and don't hold a grudge and some of what he's saying I'm assuming could be true old seals etc

But I'm now looking for a rack replacment but they have 4 different options

What is eps and trw stand for

You could enter your reg on the likes of "carparts4less" and it may well come up with correct one for yours. There data base can smetimes access deeper data.
Failing that pop into Fords with your reg AND car ID from windscreen and ask what rack is fitted.
Had to use the screen ID for daughters Fiesta a few years ago as her reg was a replacement due to previous owner having a personlised reg which they took and had it replaced with a suitable year one that Ford could not find on there system.

Join a Facebook group or forum for that model and ask the questions there. I’ve done that with both my Mondeo and my daughter’s Mazda. There is a surprising amount of good information out there, when you can filter out the boy racers and idiots.

I had an 07 focus cmax and sure it had some weird electric hydraulic steering? Hydraulic rack with an electric pump, could hear the pump wind down when you turned the ignition off. Could always double check there isn't a fluid reservoir?
Think the cmax changed in 07 - 08 from focus cmax to just cmax, bit of a facelift, maybe you are stuck in the middle

got fed up with making phone calls seeing people went near an old garage i used to use where i used to work said about the rack said this that he did say its not unheard of for a rack seals to go when being fitted but hes been doing it years and hes never had a problem in all the time hes been doing it and hes not old but defo not young any hows there normaly booked up for 6 to 8 weeks said the same when i got there but after a chat they booked it in for a saterday morning job in mid part month in feb ( so fitted me in ) he said if theres only 2 types as been said from our auto factors he will just buy the 2 and send the one not used back that way theres not any problems with not having the right one infront of them when jobs on its way


only thing i got to worry about is the pump not drying out so keep it toped up prob cost me an extra £30 in oil id expect but will not use the car unless we have to for a couple weeks apart from to and from work

rocked up with wallet in my hand please can i have (yes i only got that far was not even at the deak)bloke said you looking for parts ? if you are heres the tel number of the natinal ford company they send the parts to you we only deal with parts for cars our work shop are fitting nothing else now

i said just service stuff ? yes mate well sell no parts to the public phone up or go online order and in a day or 2 you got it


last time i went there and id been buying ford parts for years started using the motor factors places instead and if they dont have stock its normaly later that day

I must admit it was a few years ago that I had to get part for daughters then Fiesta. The Ford place this side of Bristol is in Winterstoke rd. That's still there but the parts division is now (I assume still) at least half a mile away in south liberty lane (industral estate). Guessing they don't want the rift raft mechanical types in the Winterstoke rd showroom.

Similar to my local Land Rover place, used to go into a separate door to a parts counter, now it's a chap in a suit and tie sitting behind a polished desk in the corner of the showroom who can order parts for collection in a couple of days at near enough double what I paid for the same branded parts online

I'm other side of Bristol about 12 miles out we have a Ford company there about a 4 or 6 bay shop but there's a small parts on the side or was that's where I used to go and to be fair the service parts where not that bad think I used to pay 55 quid ish for all the bits about 10 15 more than thr motor factors but its Ford stuff so did not mind the few quid extra
