Odd really
I have used ms os from dos2, and think vista is one of the best yet, so much so that I have not even looked at 7 yet

Vista is just different to xp( usually better) except for annoying stuff like uac

Personally I have found it more reliable and robust than any previous versions (and I have worked with most), you just need learn how to use it, like nearly every version.

Only 1 reason xp became so popular ..... It is very like NT so "experts" could be lazy arses and not have to learn new stuff. When released it was a nightmare

Although vista is processor hungry and is paranoid about infections I find it little different from XP to use. The aero feature is a waste of time, just disable it.
One VERY GOOD thing I have noticed about Vista is a complete lack of virus or any other infections since I started using it 3 years ago.
This is in contrast to the last PC I used XP pro on, I was forever spybot scanning that to remove a constant stream of infections.
Haven't had the opportunity to try 7 yet so can't comment.

I have the perfect cure for vista, Reformat and install XP pro, we have 2 identical laptops in our house one with xp one with vista, by comparison the vista machine is almost unusable, It questions everything you try to do, wont run older software, and is just so slow. absolute rubbish, any other product you buy as bad as this would be deemed unfit for purpose and jumped on by trading standards,

Spot on, i was dreading the day my laptop came with 7 on it, once I had turned of the warnings its a very good OS. Only had it crash once in 6 months and its get some serious abuse, try having Dreamweaver, Flash 8, Chrome, WMP, Adobe reader, MSN, utorrent and some serious media streaming going on with Vista, it fails opening notepad.

odd mine copes fine.....dw, ps, acrobat, ai or fireworks,(all cs4) word, usually a browser & itunes... chugs along quite happily as long as I dont have more than half a dozen large graphics files open.... with aero running....then again it is a machine i designed to run the above under vista, not a legacy machine or even a high spec.... serious spec at the time, going up one in any one area would have nearly doubled the cost. Running vista on a mediocre machine will give mediocre results at best....

also runs sw designed to run under versions of DOS that xp will not even load, ( couple of very old apps, & even autocad R12) a little slower than xp perhaps, but then i dont reboot every half hour so not an issue, my only gripe about vista is network transfer speeds..... but as they are always background tasks it is not a real issue. (despite being made one by some people)


4 years, 1 crash....caused by apple software, no BSD which was a weekly occurence with XP.

if you built it for that use then it will help and the only time I heard something good about Vista was on some stupidly specd PC, When I had to use my GF's laptop for some work it took me 4 hours longer to get it done.. admittedly 7 does have problems running the older problems, the problem being that it just wont, got a VM for things like that though..

If you run apps that take a lot of memory, Vista or Win7 will be a big speed-up over XP. I ran image editing software on satellite photos and XP would start swapping to disk. Same for my PCB CAD packages. Check Ram and 1/2 was not being used (shown as used for disk cache).

Vista sped thing up considerably especially when running multiple apps. Took me 2 days to disable the eye candy, UAC, firewall, malware checks and all the background tasks that waste resources. Now mine runs like XP, just faster.

I have Win7 Biz, but not an upgrade. Looks cleaner than Vista but don't want to have to reinstall everything. Had to install it on a test PC to fix a SW problem. Turns out Win7 was considerably faster and trigger a bug in my application code.

Vista sucks!!!!!
I had it on my lappy for a brief time and was glad when i finally could get rid of it! Which wasn't easy either!
I never got to crash my computer as often as with Vista, it just isn't Sparkey proof!

Trusty XP pro takes all my torrent abuse, subtitle programs etc no problems at all!

we did bench marks on a CAD machine with XP 64, Vista 64, 7 64. The best one came out to be... vista 64 the processing requirements for the OS where less than both, it fired up quicker and in general a more stable system. Though 32 bit we found xp to perform better than all the others. All our machines are 64 bit and vista has been gold with no issues, smooth running and very few crashes - No virus yet and we have had it since day 1.

Have to say all our machines run at least 8GB memory with most running 16GB or 32GB having said that, I am on the 8GB machine with vista 64 running solidworks, firefox, skype and only have 2GB memory left which means you really need 3GB just to run the operating system well. If I could I would switch to Linux kubuntu or ubuntu but it doesn't run my cad well

Almost all bench marks across the internet also found that the best operating system was and is still XP in a 32 bit operating system with vista being the best for 64 bit the gui on 7 is still to heavy

Hated Vista at first, but changed it to run classic views everywhere, desktop, folders, control panel etc. Much better. Also turned off the annoying UAC application protection thing. To use it's almost exactly like the XP Pro I have elsewhere now.

2gb ram and it runs a web/db server, SSH server and several other apps concurrently no problems at all, never once crashed in 2yrs daily use.

Don't do any heavy video processing or 3d rendering though. And I'm careful not to put any software on that might be less than well-built (apart from Office 2007 - had no choice in that matter though...), I think is this is pretty key to it being stable.

Windows 7 all the way!
By far the best one yet, had it running for ages now on my desktop and laptop with no issues.
Very stable, very fast, wouldn't use anything else now.

im with woz aswell windows 7 seems very good so far but im sure that sooner or later someone will find a security loophole they always do.
