Coming near ish to the end of the garage build finshing questions

I'm at the point where I'm putting the drive bit up to the garage but where do I put the membrane I've been told 2 different things

One person said lift the plastic flaps up and cement all the way up to fill the hole ? But surly that means water can get down in side in-between

The other what I'm thinking should be right is lay it as is that way it seals it in when the concrete is poured in ?

Bring it to the top, after the concrete has set trim with a knife and then burn into the join with a plumbers torch to give you a small joint to fill with mastic. If you stop below and let the concrete finnish right up then it will crack away and you will have water ingress anyway.

as it stands now makes no difference water will still get in when it rains as it can be blown under the rubber seal

ive had to grind a line just behind the door so the blown water can then drain back into the outside drain

that plastic should have been just inside of the door

any slope towards your garage or flat area water can be blown back under the rubber bottom of the door its also best in that situation to fit some sort of drain or even a french drain to get rid of water

Ther wil be a fair slope from the front of the garage to the road couple inches but it's the rain hitting the front of the garage that I'm worried about running down the front of the doors and over the join ?

would there be a better idea than concrete then to stop water ingress or is concrete the best idea ?

Up and over door?
Put a sealing strip across under the door, recessed a little so the drips come to the front. I used a piece of 1/4" aluminium flat on the old garage door, stopped water blowing under the door.

I'd do it this way

you don't really have to worry about water running over the crack as long as there isn't a puddle right on the crack

i will explain better

the concrete slab is protected better against water entering it or going under it, if it was internal the only issue is blown rain at the door

the way yours is done any water that runs down the side walls or the door is going to track into the slab by these methods all you can do now is seal the plastic with the sides rubber fails over time so will want replacing

this how it looks with a french drain under the door seal any water that hits the door is going into that drain easy clean out

Agreed. Most people dont even give this any consideration apart from making sure outside is lower/sloping away from inside.

Update for any one that intrested

Finally finished the front of the garage had to wait quite a few weeks for the Tarmac guys as was not a big enought job so had to wait untill they had a drive in the area and then they tagged mine at the end of day

Cost was good to be fair to them after looking at a cement mixing myself I had to buy 2 ton of x amount of bags cement then thought of a ready mix and would have still had to sort out the 1 foot at the front after with bags of cold tarmac
I done all the prep and just had a hole with type one to a level wacked down meny times to about 4/5 inches under finished level
All layed and dressed By them in 2 layers and done a nice job leaving a few mm infront of the door as per my instructions so I can finsh off and with great luck a next door had some hot tar laying about that I used yesterday on a burner melted and tiped along the joints at the front of the garage where the plastic was pulled up and cut off so filled any chance of water getting in to places that it should not and all sloped away with no chance of water pooling on any of it I think turned out realy nice (if I had a bit more experance in laying the hot Tarmac would be nice to get nice straight runs but it's not that bad and I'm was more worried about water than the finish so well happy in the end)

I know this pic has been posted on Kim’s thread. In response to OP question, if anyone can answer, Is this how it’s meant to be done? (In the diagram?) or am I missing something in the replies?

The reason I’m asking, I understand the diagram and I’m trying to get a better handle on problems/issues mistakes before I start on my build.

I’ve vague memory of been on a site when I was young and they wrapped the dpm up under the bricks?

If you read throught thr thread I think thr dpm is better finished behind wherr the car going into the garage but this was the way it was finished possably the old way ? @gazciuld poss help out

the belief was if you put the dpm back under the brick it would help to keep the water out

what happened was the sun destroyed the plastic dpm at the edge freezing weather and general clean up of weeds at edges further damaged this

the illustration shows below the concrete top and below the surface under the pavers its fine to do it this way as long as it reduces the water to a little getting in but try to run the water away from the concrete edge

its the door way thats the issue when your building a concrete slab if you want a fully level surface with no run off slope theres a few ways to do it

either step in and do the door way in 2 steps

this is so your garage base remains dry and wont track water into the garage or rolls back into the garage ive seen enough garage bases wet through inside of them and more so at the door

fit a seal at the rear of the door 2" is not the best of things to use

or you can use a french drain under the door itself which means a step back on your concrete pad then no water will get in as its drained away as fast as it pours down you just got a 2-3" gap which is an easy fill over with a 3x2 and easy enough to push vehicles over it
