2k etch wil go on allyhi there has anyone used etching primer "metcote" on engines, or can you suggest any that can be used on engines that will go on to ally.
Thanks Dockerf1
the paint will last for years but your engine wontIf your going to use 2k use 2 pack Epoxy primer, light years better than etch primer
Clean the block really well, put on 2 coats of epoxy, then wait 45 mins and go wet on wet with your colour, will last years
the paint will last for years but your engine wontall that paint will help it overheat

I've done all my engines and customers that way for the last 20 odd years, no complaints yet
Not much hope for this one then as its got 7 coats of paint on it

yes looks verry nice no doubt about it but hardly practical for using every day and certainly the paint wouldnt look like that after a 400mile round trip . ok for beetling round a few shows or the odd weekend posing
but hardly practical for everyday use its probably done more miles on a trailer than on the road
I've personally used ici 2 part long life etch primer for over 25 yrs both on ferrous & non ferrous, & find it a 1st class product, perhaps langy, you could enlighten me as to the superior qualities of epoxy primer,as I'm allways ready to learn of better products/ideas etc,but please don't slag off ici etch primer in the process as I've had good results with it over the years, I'm genuinely interested in the qualities of epoxy thanks.
slan go fol
im quite interested what paint is on the exhaust manifolds and how it stands up to the heat without discolouration . is it proper stove enameled ?
thanks for the infoThe exhaust system is polished stainless, the manifolds are also stainless but painted with VHT paint, they stay white for about a year and then get redone.
In the past when the manifolds are plain steel I have them Hot aluminium sprayed and then spray with VHT paint, the paint on it's own is no good on plain steel as it's porous and the manifolds rust from underneath.
thanks for the info![]()
sorry for it sounding that wayObviously your entitled to your own opinion but i use my cars, Not just for beetling around shows as you put it either. just because they are painted nice it doesn't mean you can't use them.
I don't trailer my cars and neither do my friends. To be honest i think your comment is a bit insulting !!!
My 1956 F100 pickup was used everyday for the 12 years i owned it and the paint on the engine was as good as the day i painted it even after 90,000 miles. In my opinion Epoxy and 2 pack for engines is by far the best, Remember building for customers i don't want to be redoing the paint on an engine.
sorry for it sounding that waywasnt intentional
:some people just take to shows and never use . that i cant see the point .those that drive and use and show have my admirationkeep up the good work( quality stuff)
First off I'm not slagging it off as you put it but its progress.
2 pack Epoxy is used these days for priming aircraft, oil rigs, boats etc etc. its anti corrosive and its adhesion qualities are amazing, Its also incredibly tough, After 12 years and 90,000 miles my truck had a few chips underneath the floor, the chips had chipped the paint and primer down to the epoxy but nowhere was the epoxy chipped.
Its also not porous like other primers and once dry fillers can be applied on top of it. Do a search and you will see the benefits.
All my friends in the highend restoring business use it because its good and reliable and when working on very expensive bodyshells we need the best product out there.
If etch was better there wouldn't be any need for epoxy to be invented.
You mention the problem with the paint chipping off the epoxy primer. What about using an epoxy top coat (colour) over the primer?
Presumably it's not available in fancy flake and metallic finishes required on hotrods and customs but for ordinary cars / trucks is it any good?
