I'll just leave this here...... scary!

well so far I havnt seen any electric cars on fire (apart from on TV or the internet) , I'll worry about it when it happens

Christ that's lucky! Sell it quickI've done 15k in mine, it hasn't caught fire once
Some years ago I had a camper based on an old Merc 307D.In 1978 I was a passenger in my father's Mini pickup. The battery is under the seat in the pickup.
It shorted on the seat frame and made it a very interesting trip!
He put the fire out by beating it with gloved hands.
It hasn't put me off petrol cars though![]()
I've only seen one car battery fire up close - & that was in a mate's car many moons ago (a nice Vauxhall VX4/90 that I was in, that he'd just crashed). The biff shorted the battery against the bonnet. Some years ago I had a camper based on an old Merc 307D.
Leaving a campsite one morning, it sounded a bit graunchy starting up but I didn't take much notice until I tried to pull out onto the road and there as a loud clang, followed by a burning-insulation smell. The starter motor had fallen off and lodged between the block and a chassis leg. It had landed just right to wedge the terminals against the bare metal.
The battery was under the passenger seat on these. Cue frantic scrabbling to find an 8mm spanner, turf the Mrs out of the way, pull the seat cushion off and undo the terminal before it all caught fire. Then yet another trip on a recovery truck and a whole day waiting around while it got fixed.
There were lots of episodes like that one, I spent more time fixing the thing than driving it. She gets a nervous twitch every time I mention getting another one...
True but there is normally fair warning something is wrong way before the event, what botheres me is these things going up in flames when on charge, not nice in the middle of the night. I am pro leccy cars but wouldn’t have one on charge anywhere near my home.Petrol cars have been catching fire for years and years.

I'm trialling an off peak slow charge mode. Mine has been plugged in at the side of the house since Sunday. Not loosing any sleep over it
Makes perfect sense.

I reckon a lot of the issues are due to the forcing of masses of energy fast into batteries (also the energy density being crammed-in to cells).I'm trialling an off peak slow charge mode. Mine has been plugged in at the side of the house since Sunday. Not loosing any sleep over it

Fast charging might be a desirable selling point to make the refuelling events less inconvenient and more attractive to punters - but I for sure see it as a higher risk and detrimental to cells long-term.
In fact - I think a lot of the issues people have with the EV is that it's bring forced as a direct replacement for an ICE in all scenarios & applications... which doesn't make best use of the tech. To me a battery car makes sense as a low power, short distance commuter runabout - this usage pattern of base-to-base, local runs is where the tech works.
I meant the forcing & pushing the tech to the limits for impressive performance claims.Fast charging is a necessity on long journeys. I only do it when necessary
EV is not being forced on anyone
