O yes, I have experienced long waiting times before when my truck was still under warranty going in for some work at Ford dealers.

I found them to be slow, half of the time incompetent (requiring multiple visits to sort an issue out) and very expensive.

The last time I had my truck serviced and MOT at a Ford dealer they:
1. Did not provide the MOT certificate (I had to go back to get it).
2. Did not stamp the service book (I know it is online too but still).
3. Did not annotate they conducted the mandatory paint check (not online or in the service book).
4. Overfilled the engine oil.
5. When I went to drain some oil out at home I found they did not change the sump plug (charged me for a new one on the service paperwork though).

I kicked up such a fuss I had them 'redo' the service. I said I could not trust them and I don't even know if they changed the oil or changed the filters. They assured me they did, but I just came back and said you also said you changed the sump plug.

Waited outside the workshop where I could see my truck and got new oil, new oil filter and a new sump plug

Ford = Best to be avoided if you can.

4 x new ABS sensors, half a wiring loom, new ABS ECU plus labour*...
* Labour = Blindly swapping parts over until it's fixed.

My Ranger is out of warranty in a couple of weeks. After that its over to my mates garage for servicing.

Mine was in for a new gear box and clutch, under warranty. While it was there it went on fire, they should have let it burn

The short warranty is what puts me off buying a Ranger….the same truck from VW has 5.

6 weeks isn't that bad.
Before I got made redundant, local Ford dealer was about 4 weeks. Citroen/Peugeot was 3 months. Vauxhall varied between a few weeks, and a couple months, although if it was VOR they'd often look at it before the booked date. VW was usually a few weeks, but if it was something fairly minor, they'd often squeeze it in within a couple weeks.

Technician shortages mean everybody is struggling to keep on top of available work.

the only vehicle I've owned that had warranty was a Renault. on the rare occasions i needed to have work done, the wait time was a few days at most. twice i had work done same day. once they sent a manager out to drive it to the dealer as i couldn't afford the time away from work. (a reoccurring warranty fault)

otoh, my company works vans have had a minimum of 2 weeks wait (vauxhall) and up to 6 months (ford)

A 6 week wait is terrible. Especially if you paid £50k+ for a vehicle which has gone bad while under warranty.

In my opinion, a week is acceptable.

I guess if people accept a 6 week/3 month wait, Ford and other dealers will be happy to just continue their 'service' as they are currently...

Ford dealer is the only garage I’ve had this. The VW and Peugeot garages I deal with are under a week. The Peugeot garage is in our town so maybe a smaller number of cars coming in, VW is In Glasgow

Probably being a bit naive here, but I'm assuming that if its under warranty they'll give you a replacement until they find the time to fix yours?

We never got a courtesy car. Don’t know if they were ever asked to supply one

I am booked at least a month in advance in my garage. Unless it a very small job or you willing to leave your car and we will fit it in (if we can).

Everybody is so short of labour/fitters/techs - lots of places are over three months ahead now and falling behind all the time due to parts shortages ex Europe.

We so busy - I stopped booking big jobs late November - refusing to quote for any job with more than fours hours labour in it. Yeah I will chuck a clutch or an auto gearbox on your car - but we not doing any engine swaps or stripping engines now. Plus I knocked all the insurance warranty work on the head as well.

Labour rates are gonna to go thru the roof I think - wages for staff have gotta go up to recruit staff and keep them and labour rates charged out will skyrocket. There just is not enough mechanics/MOT testers/lorry fitters to go round.

Depends on the warranty terms.
Generally fleets don't get a courtesy vehicle, unless they're big enough to negotiate it is as part of their contract.
Only time I've been aware of any fleet getting one, it was only when parts were on back order for more than 48hrs.

Private buyers vary, but generally under manufacturer warranty, you'll get one.
Courtesy vehicle is when manufacturer's will move mountains to find parts.
Speak to any dealer tech, and they'll tell you just how quickly they'll find parts once they're paying the bill for a hire vehicle.

My last Corsa needed a steering rack under warranty, and the dealer was given an estimated delivery of two months time, but as I knew the dealer, they gave me the part number and the Vauxhall customer care phone number. I phoned them up, gave them the details, and said I was wanting a hire vehicle as I wasn't happy driving the car in it's current state (an inner track rod had worn, and was starting to be noticeable when driven, but the track rod was on back order with no date).
The dealer phoned me two days later, asking what I'd said to Vauxhall, as a rack had just been delivered by a courier direct from Germany, which even the dealer hadn't seen before.

Similar happened to my brother with one of his early Navaras when the rear axle seized. Nissan knew about the problem, but estimated delivery was 3 months. As he needed a similar vehicle with a tow bar, it was going to cost Nissan over £100 a day for a suitable vehicle, as the dealer didn't have a suitable vehicle. A new axle appeared within a week.

Not just in the motor trade but most if not all trades!
I'm 8 weeks booking unless it's an emergency. (Electrical)
The plumbing/ heating, building and carpenters, plastering trades are all long waits for a decent one, there is a huge shortage of all skilled workers.
I read an interesting piece a few weeks ago in an electrician magazine that said for every 10 people who left the trade 1 new apprentice was being trained!

I got offered a Ford Fiesta as a 'courtesy' car when my truck was in for 4 weeks to sort a rusty chassis.

Ford still expected me to pay the daily insurance cost (from memory £5 or £10 a day) for the 'courtesy' car

I refused to pay it and they gave in after I kicked up a fuss. Luckily my truck is just my 'car' and at that time I did not have to have a like for like vehicle. I would have been in trouble if I needed my truck for work.

He said his bank balance looked brilliant, but what use is it when you're working 60-70hrs a week and hardly see your family. And if you didn't work the overtime, you'd be pulled in to the office and asked why.
Another dealer tech got a job elsewhere, as he was fed up having to work Saturdays, and not get to spend it with his kids. Management didn't see why they should let him not work Saturdays.

Things are slowly changing, but there are still lots of owners/managers who think techs lives should revolve around work, and that they should be grateful for being employed by them.

I would not get into the trade if I was young - there is just easier ways of earning a living than the motor repair trade.

I had a good living out of owning a garage - but I done allot of hours for it.

I will be up at six in morning and at work tommoro - Sunday - I should get home for a late Sunday lunch with family at 1pm.
