Farside , don't you recall having to tie thick hessian corn sacks or fit special mufflers over front engined car radiators in severe frosty weather .? It's also a good reason to point radiator ends of cars to a wall so th wind chill does not kill the anti freeze treated coolant . I Germany we had three bottle of different antifreeze strengths on a shelf out side our guardrooms in the winter months . They were checked for crystals of ice every 20 min in severe cold weather .
Three time in 15 yrs of service life I was dragged out my slumbers to get dressed as warm as I could and go and help drain all vehicle rads of trucks parked outside as the temp was south of - 25 oC

There is no such thing as Wind Chill on an inanimate object.
The remainder is physics.

For A level physics I built a hot wire wind gauge...it relied on the wind cooling a heated coil of wire in the wind flow Vs a control coil not in the flow....seem to remember it worked quite well.

It does relate to “living things” generally I believe. Wind chill won’t make anything colder than the ambient temperature, only how quickly it gets there.

Yeah wind chill is not convection, it's an effect produced by convection in animal skin. The hot wire wind gauge works by convection. The faster the air warmed by the hot wire is moved away, the greater the delta-T from wire to air and therefore the greater the convection.

All this amazes me really. The Romans and their straight roads are quite easy to figure. I used to live near to Strood in Kent. We used to play on the railway sidings there, and all the other mischief, but there is the Strood railway tunnel that runs from Strood to Higham. Built originally as a canal tunnel in 1830ish, (you can find the history online if interested) It is two and a half miles long through chalk, and if you stand in the middle of tracks, which I have, you can see the light at the other end !
Apparently they started from both ends. How did they do that ??

A long thin straight tube tied at the ends to two long thin strong cords , at the top end a wooden bar over a cardinal point card , gently turn the top rod to a surveyed point above ground point , the tube down the hole points you in the direction to dig when you look through the tube .

Here in Wales ..... You're likely to get a visit from the environmental protection officers and collect a fine for doing that even it if is on your own drive way . plus The Councils enforcem4nt officer might also take umbrage too as you will be likely causing a nuisance to your neighbours .

Or a better hotel . Decent hotels usually have subterranean garages under them or very close by .

Basically the same idea but used 2 of them as I recall. Was a few decades ago so can't remember all the details...seem to remember there was a 741 amplifier in the circuit somewhere.

Actually this might predate MAF sensors?...depends when they came in.

The coils were wired in series (I think) and then I monitored the mid point ...where tiny voltage changes occurred as the resistance changed due to the wind cooling effect!

Out of interest, does the automatic de-icing work on the headlights and rear light clusters, and is the screenwash tubing preheated?

Depends if there is enough heat in the lamp to melt the ice . Some cars may have aheater wired in the lens too as LED light may not give enough heat out . I've often had to ensure my rear light are regularly cleaned in dirty freezing weather , same with the number plates
The alcohol in the screen wash if strong enough should not ice up in the tubing. Though in the northern climes there might well be lay flat trace heat wires inside the wiper pipe work similar to fuel lines and around the washer jet . " Sheep " might know the answer to this as he is in Iceland

I note that there have been a spate of thefts from driveways as a direct result of this practice, recently. No doubt leading to much bibbling from the owners.

Might want to check your insurance policy wording ...I suspect you might cause yourself some problems if it did go for a walk!

Not illegal, but good luck dealing with your insurance company if someone hops in and drives it away.

To be fair and speaking personally, I'd be pretty impressed if somebody was desperate enough to vault over a gate, break into a locked car and ram raid their getaway in a 25 year old banger, but I agree it is a risk. I reckon probably less than keyless theft thesedays, but who knows!

I suppose it was more the notion that warming up a vehicle before driving off in the cold is now a feature of the EV driving master race and worthy of an app, rather than something people have just done for donkeys years that tickled me.

The problem is that the alcohol tends to evaporate at the nozzle faster than the water, increasing the freezing point, especially if the car has been standing around for a couple of days. Even screenwash "rated" at -10degC will freeze in the nozzle if the outside air temp is -5, if it's been standing around.

At -17C grabbed a bottle of washer fluid last year, put it in the reservoir.
I discovered that it was freeze proof to 0 C instead of the normal -30 or -35C.

If EVs and PHEVs will pay the same VED...I think I'd choose the PHEV unless I lived in zero emission and/or congestion zone?
