@ukracer - I not anti EV at all - I just am not a new car buyer - and the thought of used EV out of warranty - does not sit well with me.

But hold this thought - I would not have a newish Land Rover out of warranty either.

All I want is cheap - reliable motoring - I don't do many miles a year.

I will also state I am not anti EV but like you have identified areas which don't sit right with me.
Charging is ill thought out. Battery life and cost is being hidden.

I would not buy land rover . 1 because if cost of spares and 2 price of insurance and steal ability.

I have had a 07 plate passat for a few years but recently took a loan out to get a car my Dad can get into as he needs driving round now. I now have a Tiguan. (Which apparently is a problem car)
But no way could I afford a loan for an EV or repairs out of warranty.

I have an xc70d5 manual 2006. 46000 miles now i bought it 3 years ago (26000 miles) for £9600. a really nice car to drive only downside is £400 road tax. My son was looking for a £1500 vw last year but what was £1500 is now 4 or 5k. ULES will end up everywhere in the not too distant future so he decided on a Volvo v40D4 2016, 71000 miles ules euro6, £0 road tax, cost £10,500. The benefit of buying old big Volvos is you don't need to weld the body.

Warranty on our Hyundai (current car no1) is about to expire so it'll be rotated out of of the fleet...going to sell it and buy something that I can fix myself!

The Hyundai is fully loaded...with stuff that would be very expensive to fix WHEN it goes wrong!

My previous v70 1999 5 cylinder diesel was better than the d5 (2006) i had no engine problems apart from ac alternator and heater plugs. The D5 has had an injector and an exhaust recirculating valve/solenoid, maybe due to standing idle for long periods before i purchased it. 1999 had metered injection from the pump whereas the d5 is metered at the injector. Both are much better than the 740 vw 2.5l diesel 1996 which had mechanical injectors which were rubbish.

A guy at work, who's of the same 'bangernomics' mindset as me, has bought his Mrs a 10 year old Leaf to do her 3-mile commute in. Seems ideal for that, range is quite a way down on when it was new but still perfectly usable. If it lasts another few years he'll have had his money's worth.

There are two main things that put me off.

I'm not averse to new gadgets. But I recognise they're bound to have a short lifespan before software bloat makes them completely unusable. That's part of the trade-off of having the hardware subsidised by Google. So I specifically don't want all the features of a smartphone, which will be obsolete in a few years, integrated with my car, or my TV, or my fridge. I expect them to last many times longer than that. In fairness, this gripe is equally true of new petrol cars.

The other one is the fragmented charging setup. I'm used to being able to take my car anywhere and be confident that even if I've never heard of the supplier before, I can turn up, refuel it, pay with cash or a bank card and go. Flat rate per mile which I can see before I even drive in, no subscriptions, apps or other vendor lockin involved.
I expect this situation will improve in time. I can see a lot of parallels with mobile phones, I didn't even consider having one before pay-as-you-go came in, for the same reasons.

One of the other big turn off issues for me is the interior. A Tesla for example, looks like it was 'designed' by a five year old with Lego, after getting an iPad for Christmas.

I test drove a Tesla, other than the speed it was terrible. Not paying £50k to have a car that looks like it was assembled by someone who struggled with Airfix models

On a general note...If the public transport/haulage system(s) had been rationalised instead of a private freeforall....then perhaps ...just perhaps, people could have been coaxed out of their cars?
My local railway station is great if I want a scenic run, but thanks to Dr Beeching getting to a Metroplis is like a flight to Oz and costlier (exaggeration for dramatic effect)

My biggest problem with the railways is the fact that you cannot rely on them running. There is always some ransom attempt going on, meaning that it is safer to take the car.

The idea of privatising them was to improve effiency? Where did that go wrong?

To elucidate, you cannot rely on the service running because there will always be the RMT or whoever trying to bring down the government.
