Cement Mixer cleaning

My dad built his own mixer from a washing machine motor and a metal barrel. Could make your own new drum?

I reckon a beer barrel would be good, cement wouldn't stick to ally as much and the drum wouldn't go rusty!

See what your local plant hire wants for a new one... if they usually buy six or seven mixers direct from the makers like we did it is quite cheap to add a new spare barrel to the order.

Buy it very, very soon then.
Prices are going through the roof since the takeover.
We buy dozens of the things and we can't buy them for that.

cleaning after every job is a lovely idea....ant 99% of teh time is ok, but you always get some jobs where you cant... eg last one we had a power outage, all I could do to scrape & clean what I could without hosing it out down customers drive... not an option, cheaper to skip the mixer.....

They do get mortar built up in them when you have limited space to wash out properly ie. residential areas They get heavier too. I use the blowtorch for burning on felt and a wooden mallet on both sides

Dont hit with mash hammer.......you are only providing a key for more mortar to stick to. Sand and stones will never remove cured mortar ..........only previous 24hrs stuff.

Years ago if a squad had fallen out with agent and jacked it they used to
leave mixer filled with mortar. Quite often you would see the Labourers cleaning them out with a fire and long pinch bars.

i recently was given my late FIL’s mixer. It’s got more than just a few bits of dried mortar in and on it. I’ll try the hot torch and mallet first, then some gravel and water. Any other tips for this slightly down-at-heel specimen, please

Brick cleaner (hydrochloric acid).

yea shotblast it m,y mixers 40 odd years old not a patch of cement on it and drum not marked. only had to blast and paint once as some prick i lent it to brought it back dirty now no one gets it

hope you wore ear defenders the noise is horrendous even hitting cement off with a hammer in drum

I'm thinking that sounds like exactly what you do when you actually use the machine? : )


(Mine is well dented up, as it was when I bought it, but it's clean inside)


The fire thing - doesn't that cook the bearing?

Why bother ?
it's simply protecting area's from erosion, also it's obvious an area that doesn't get proper mixing action,
so consider it a filler.

We bought that mixer for £15 and needed a good cleanout! It was for mixing dyed mortar for some ridge tiles on the main roof but our brickies needed our nice mixer to finish the extension. Our shiny mixer is behind it. That one gets looked after!

Only on this forum do people have an every day mixer, and a good one for special use at the weekend.

when its been striped down it works but people dont want to do that so cook the grease in the bearing

hammer and chisel job for me to clean mine after lending it to someone who said theyed clean it out and they didnt

Reminds me of some "million dollar house" type programme Mrs Robo watches, one house had xx bedrooms, xx bathrooms and 2 kitchens, one "show kitchen" to impress visitors but is never used and a "working kitchen" for preparing food
