Anyone getting a smaller 'cleaner' car due to vehicle excise duty rise on older cars?

a Vauxhaul dealer I know was charging £100 per hour 10 years ago....
reason I know my mate wanted a new drivers door mirror.....240 for the mirror plus the lab....

I needed the the clutch changed on mt D T4.....ramp not up yet....
went to a local w/shop....I supplied the parts,wanted a named brand part.....
he charged me €125 for the job inc VAT.....!!!
why would I bother to do it...?

I got a little fleet of VW ups and Skoda Citigos - for loaners at garage - most are £20 a year - but one Citigo is Zero rated - they are all indentical cars - with indentical engines and emissions. Plus I have one - 2010 petrol 1.2 Renault Clio which is £180 a year - and yes from the OP post - I am thinking about selling it on - due to the roadtax price.

My own VW Diesel estate car is: £180 a year. Has a DPF - Euro5

But you can buy a used Zero rated Euro5 diesel car...? (depending on year first registered)

Trade plates are £180 a year - which has always sort of indicated the average road tax price on the UK roads.

But my little 108cc Honda Scooter is £24 a year - full Euro 3 thing with a Cat - 150mpg - the least polluting vehicle on the planet - but I have cars that are cheaper - work that one out?

your not wrong with the term minefield…I think some of the over inflated road tax on the newish big 4x4s will make them almost unsalable in a few years time as used cars.

As for the 40k bit, Id get it as a company car tax, its a perk etc, but to drive on tarmac with pot holes…sure they do the same damage or less than my pick up or landrover at what ever the current LCV is these days.

Nope, I’ll drive what I like. Just had to change the Skoda Superb estate after the engine let go. Road tax was the last (zero) consideration in the buying process.
I am also a heavy user of the fillthathole pothole reporting site. The more they increase road tax, the more I will report. So many people complain about potholes but very few actually bother to report any.

Taxing trucks is a strange one, trailers are free and there are games you can play with axles on the ground vs the taxable weight (not to be confused with the plated weight).There are then discounts/concessions etc for road friendly axles (rear steer) and emissions compliance . You can end up with 32 tons of truck on the road paying less roadfund than a small car.

My sons first car was a Skoda Citigo, Zero road tax. My current car is a battered old Toyota Corolla, its coming up for 21 years old now, i checked a few weeks ago & was surprised to find it is Ulez compliant.
One of my friends drives a 1924 Austin 7, he hangs a sign in it when he parks up it says, "Save the planet, Drive a car that lasts 100 years".

I use an app called Fix My Street, it seems to work fairly well except for anything reported down my lane!
I'll try fillthathole now though.

Got rid of my 03 XC70 2.5t due in part to the road tax (£325 pa I think it was)...wasn't the only factor...the main one was the headlights being so terrible.

...then I missed the Volvo so looked at buying a newer 06 v70 2.5t...until I saw the road tax was £625 pa which to me seems pretty insane.

We've also got an EV which is £0 currently...but likely will be VED added in 2025 or 2027 I believe. Lots of support for taxing EVs...but I reckon EVs will end up being the lowest VED so it's going to be interesting what happens to older cars me thinks!

I run a battered old Kia Sorrento diesel. The tax is now close to £400 a year. If the virulent rust doesn't finish it off another tax rise might.
Wifey's Swift Sport went up a good chunk as well.

2002 Defender Td5. No emissions kit to go wrong.

Will be keeping it despite the tax rise, which is small in comparison to fuel and other costs. Plus, being a pickup with IW top, it’s very hard to lose in a car park.

Oh dear! Thinking of going the "other way". Currently have an all electric, zero tax until next year, then I think it's going to be £170. Want something with knobs and buttons, not silly touch screens and as I don't need 4 seats have thought about either an MX5 or SLK. The Mercedes appears to be cheaper on tax, though I have had experience of MB parts costs!

Agree with premmington's comments above, my Honda 125 scooter is £24. Used to be annoyed at the cost of bigger bike tax as opposed to a car. HMG ought to be encouraging bikes as they cause far less congestion.

I suspect (unfortunately) that might be zero currently...I was also looking for a cheaper tax diesel (theres a few euro6 ones out there)....but I'm holding fire at the moment.

I think there's no way they can sell an EV tax of £170pa in a couple years and keep diesels at zero...they'll look rather stupid and get roasted in the press....maybe the EV tax will apply to new ones only going forwards (wishful thinking).
