tried to cast a number plate got a square biscuit tin lid and spent ages making a reverse image of the letters melted down some old scrap
poured it in and twang like pissin on a cold urinal letters were great but it had a twist on it never had the time to get sand etc

I had a few attempts last year, plan to do more when I get time to remake furnace. I underestimated how much a pain it is when electric element falls loose!

Metal Melter
Looking at @Kram 's fire clay/element build... Thinking to: 3D print the inner of a mould with a spiral on the outside. Should allow the element to sit perfectly, In segments for easy removal. Then place in a large container and fill the gap with this stuff...

BIL did similar 40 yrs ago made two , bored to 1/2 inch ball bearing plus a tad more for clearance .22 LRF cordite x 2 for powder . Complete cannon on a 30 inch long gun carriage with limber to suit . One sold for a lot of money once the workshops owner had a fired his copy out in the back yard area .

I once melted some aluminium in a tin can, over a camp fire, and cast a crude religious cross in a mould made by scraping grooves in the ground.
This was at a bike rally, quiet afternoon after the pub kicked out, not some engineering experiment.

I mostly make one - off motorcycle parts or sometimes machinery parts that would be otherwise prohibitively expensive.
Have two furnaces and one little Flamefast LN1000 gas kiln, which is brilliant for small sized castings in aluminium or zinc alloys.
It will just about do some of the bronzes, but really can't manage copper effectively.
Apart from that, I've a Flamefast CRM 600S that is supposed to be able to melt cast iron, and one of the old drum type Kasenit units fitted with a 1.5" Amal compressed air assisted propane injector.
On full belt, the thing howls, and you can feel the ground vibrating.
About 75 kW, we reckon....
There's even some parts for a sand muller, awaiting further progress......

yep then turned it down and finished it on the lathe ther barrels 10 inch long and the carriage and wheels cut from an old kitchen oak door
