Driving inheavy rain onthe M$ a warning light & sounder activated indicating a problem with my tyre pressures, Luckily I was close to my destination where Fizzy has a freight unit.

Fizzy checked my tyres with a TP gauge & we found the RHR wheel was 10 PSI lower than the 35 PSI it should be. Reversing very slowly , Fizzy found I'd got a crosshead screw in the tyre tread .

There is no spare wheel on the EV , I was supplied with an aerosol inflator ;ek stop canister .
Seeing as it is a Motability vehicle I have to abide by their insurance policy terms so rather than pull the screw and pop the inflator can in the tyre I called the RAC , 15 min later the guy arrived , saw the screw , used a battery drill to remove it then popped a reamer in the hole to clean it of any cut wires etc .

Next he used a tool to stretch a 4x4mm or so square profile rubber band so it was reduced to thick button thread dimensions.
After coating the tool pointed end & the stretched band in quick set vulcanizing no heat compound he pushed the device with band into the hole , released the band pressure and withdrew the tool leaving the band in the hole & glue to hold the elastic band in place .
Two minutes later he'd inflated the tyre and I was ready to be on my way ..... with the advice I must not exceed 50 mph & must get th tyre looked at as a Kwikfit tyre service place as soon as possible for it to be removed properly & permanantly repaired otr reneweed as the case may be
MY Oh My, how punctured tyres technology has advance in the last few years . Had it not been possible he would have popped the EV on th trailing axle and towed me to the nearest open repair place or called out KWIKFIT 24 hr. repair services . Had to smile when he mentioned the trailing axle as a set of initials , I asked him what it meant & why call it by the initials ..it's gone Woke .......... no longer allowed to call it a dummy axle nor a tow dolly.

RDT? That's what the manufacturer calls it - rapid deployment transporter. (I thought it was trailer, apparently not.) The AA one is a CRT - compact recovery trailer.

Not sure why you think that's "woke"? Just an abbreviation, i don't think anyone says "anti-lock braking system" over ABS.

I had 3 rear wheel punctures on my bike over this last year, after 20+ years with not a single puncture.
First puncture was right at the side of the tread, so garage guy said a new tyre required..... and 1000 miles into the new tyre I picked up a screw.

I used my battery drill to remove it, and used my 'wiggly worm' repair kit to fix it. Basically a bradawl to clean the hole, then a pokey tool to simply shove a glue covered rubber worm into the hole.

I pumped it to 38psi and did another 7000 miles on it with nary a worry.

Then I fitted a new tyre, as it was worn out..... and got a puncture 1000 miles later.... Fixed that myself too.

Puncture repairs have certainly moved on in recent years.

We used to repair tyres that way 30+ years ago when I worked in a gas station. Some could be repaired like it some couldn’t I can’t remember what determined it. But there were no restrictions on those tyres - maybe someone has done some testing over the years and hence the speed/time limit now. I do think we see far less punctures these days - absolutely no data to back that up just my own experience - I often wonder if tyre or rubber design has become more resilient to debris.

I’ve probably just jinxed myself !!!

basically a one sided mushroom with a smaller head . If its not on the sidewall I would get a proper mushroom fitted and never worry.

Punctures on a new tyre are sods law, happens in the first 500 miles because the rubber is much softer and will pick up more.
I buy puncture repaired nearly new Pilot Road5 rears for the cbr6, not only cheaper, they have not given me any punctures, thats dispite the moulding dimples still being visible - very new.

Strings are not permanent. They soon loose their stick and can fall into the tyre if you hit a bump etc, particually if its slightly low on air. Usually good for a couple weeks then its worth doing properly.
I have done it myself, wore rears down to the cord with strings in, but then I tested them. I replace tyres myself and the worms on worn tyres were extremely easy to pop in.

If I get a bike puncture I will have the tyre off and fit a proper internal mushroom repair, does not take me long to do.

One cold winter I had a drawing pin in the cbr6 front causing a slow leak. i didnt have time to do it and wanted to use a 3mm mushroom instead of 6mm, so couldnt use a 6mm string. I put the pin back in with superglue and commuted on it about a week in icy weather

I have done it myself, wore rears down to the cord with strings in, but then I tested them. I replace tyres myself and the worms on worn tyres were extremely easy to pop in.

I've found that "wiggly worms" that are easy to get in will also easily fall out, so wouldn't trust them. On the other hand, if the strings are difficult to get in, but go in a reasonable distance, they aren't going to come out again.

Edit: I meant fully fitted strings that have been driven on. If you push them, they can go into the air space of the tyre. A perfectly shaped stone could do it while driving. After a while they loose their stick, it will take less force to push them in. If the tyre has had latex slime, they generally wont stick at all.

Strings wont come out due to the ball shape when you twist them, but they can go further in, theres only the thickness of the tyre to hold them, and the pressure in the tyre to resist movement.
A 6mm hole will cause a rapid deflation from 30psi.

As I said, they have a purpose, great as an emergency repair that will still do 140mph, just worth noting that they are temporary and should be replaced a short time after when convienient. If you dont do your own tyres, take it to a shop.

The fact many people have got away with it, does not make it safe.

I have the kit with the string type, has never failed me.
However the condemming (at least around these parts) puncture that can't be repaired is a side wall one.
