I'm thinking it might be a nice easy way to get neat patches into wheelarches, sills etc.

yep got an air joggler with a hole punch good for plug welding aswell

I thought the same as you did until I bought one. It is fine for patches that stay dry, unless the lap is thoroughly sealed, and don't require much dressing.
In practice I rarely ever use it now preferring to butt weld any patches or repair sections.

I have one of the hand jogglers/combined hole punch. I find that the hole that it punches is too small for a decent spot weld.
Its very handy in places where the appearance doesn't matter.
I use a weld through zinc primer under the overlap. Then make sure its sealed well with seam sealer on BOTH sides to prevent rust from forming in between.

Hrm. This is all very useful, thank lads.
I've always spent an age forming patches and butt welded them in. Then the idea of a joggler popped into my head. Getting too long in the tooth to spend so much time forming patches.
For the moment I'll pass, I can't justify the brass just now.
