It is no joke that it takes as much energy to make a car as it consumes in energy during it useful life. If batteries cost half the value of a new ev the life expectancy will be 10 to 15 years. My diesel Volvo i expect to last 25 years and when it is beyond economic repair it can be crushed.

If you look on You Tube there are numerous videos about even small amount of damage to the battery can cause the car to be written off as a new battery is almost as much as a brand new car !

With a short life and high depreciation it does appear fair that they receive a small road tax benefit. My son has a diesel Volvo V40 D4 1.9litre 192 bhp 2016 which is zero tax rated, ULEZ zero rated euro 6, work that one out.

Should double it, to bring it in line with other vehicles, after all, I don't see a difference between any EV and a normal ICE vehicle of similar size.

Its supposed to be a ROAD FUND LICENCE. You are still using the same road and taking up the same space. I can see the logic of a difference between cars and commercials of various types, and electric commercials should be charged the same rate as ICE ones.

OR, how's this for an idea .......... Reduce the rates for ICE vehicles to the same level as EVs ?

Same road and space but ev's are rolling roadblocks, quarter of normal speed and driven a 10th as well because they are too preoccupied on their battery range. The funny thing is they brake and waste energy when its safe to continue moving. In london, being a hesitant EV driver must half or quarter the usable range!

I'd suggest all cars should be taxed the same on the H band, wouldnt bother me as thats what Im paying already.

i wouldnt dispute it, my point was it probably doesnt affect the range anything like as much as you think.

Alternators/generators are well under 50% efficiency at getting power back in battery.

Anyway besides the point, they are bloody £@!?@£# irritating as they prevent me driving smoothly.

I asked the DPD driver how many miles per charge with his big van. 110 miles and an hour to charge, my diesel is over 400 miles and 5 mins to refill.

Yea but in London my diesel would have cost me £12.50 a day .

In cities EVs & PHEVs make a lot of sense...if the trip is less than 200 miles I use the EV....if not I use the Petrol car because an hour to charge can turn into 3 hrs if all the chargers are busy!

The signs are clear in any case that the days of subsidised EV motoring are limited. The holiday is ending.
EV Road tax (VED, whatever) coming in 2025.
Already new houses have to have separate electricity metering installed for the EV charging - which can only mean one thing (the intention to charge additional rates/tax/duty on electricity being used as vehicle fuel).
Sure as eggs are eggs they'll have the plan to require all homes EV charging to have EV metering - its just a matter of time.
The carrots have been dangled to attract the punter..... now they are tee-ing up the sucker-punch where they grab back all the money & more. It's just a matter of when, not if.

Cynical? Moi? Not really, just a sensible total distrust of the Political Class & the Civil Service & their motivation, based on history & experience.

If the filters and good quality oil is changed regularly, a diesel gives ample warning of requiring maintenance before it fails.

Well the free money is over for VW in Germany from the government - VW profits were down 40% due to this (and high interest rates).

Sounds familiar, like what happened with the push to get diesel cars, once ownership went up the price of diesel went from a cheap, mainly commercial use fuel to been more expensive than petrol.

The drive for smart meters (which will have the ability to monitor & alter tariffs based upon load and load profile, & upon total demand in any given period of time, & to switch tariff rates on-the-fly to meet whatever they impose).... will ensure few if any escape the surveillance net.

Note they've already made the move to outflank any enterprising people switching to Red Diesel & generators to avoid Fuel Duty levels of taxation to charge their EV's (or whatever)... by largely outlawing the availability of RD for anything other than agricultural use (even big commercial rental generating sets [being commercial] are required to run white diesel & pay full Duty).

The only realistic way in future to save money - will be to quite simply use a lot less.
Energy cost (& availability quite likely) is what will control the greater population in future, restricting their travel & mobility & achieving the "15-minute City" thing, providing almost total control & management of populations & their movement.
And all in the name of saving the planet eh!

Yea but once consumption drops they'll simply increase the daily standing charge to compensate I would think.

Only real solution is probably off grid...but then they can simply tax solar panels by the sqm...if historically they can tax windows I'm pretty sure they can justify taxing anything!

And will be achieved by Govt using a great big Financial Stick to beat the populace into compliance - starting of course, by walloping the poorest first.

Yes they have dangled a few carrots - but an awful lot of us saw past the carrot to look at the long-term - & didn't take the bait.

Meanwhile, and as unobtrusively as possible, moves have been made to close in and ensure we can be herded.

While the sheep have been distracted munching on a few juicy carrots, the fences and runs have been erected around them.

My BiL had his EV written off when the battery cracked after going through a pot hole
