Steel grade equivalent to a 8.8 bolt.

En19T, also known as 709M40T or 4140 is my favorite. Ideally you want carbide tools to turn it due to the 1% chromium content.
Should be more forgiving than EN24T, slightly lower strength.

What heat treatment is it ?
Also it does work harden IIRC so no rubbing, cut it or don't.

No idea. It was just a buckshee bit of bar, I thought it was plain old MS until the drill bounced off it.
Ended up ordering a 50mm long sample of FCMS from an ebay seller - just to make a pivot boss! Turned most of it to swarf and fitted oilite bushes in it.

I have some 4140 bar about 30/32mm diameter here; was planning to use it to make a pivot boss for my tyre changer (in the 'duck's head' thread) but although I cut a length off with a slitting disc and could take a skim cut off it, I couldn't get the bloody lathe centre drill to do more than tickle it!
At that point I didn't know what it was so I took it into work and PMI'd it: something like 0.8% Cr. It feels really heavy for its size as well, odd.

They stated in the first post that they thought it was mild until they tried to drill it, at which point the centre drill barely touched it so they took it to work to test and found it to be 4140.

You do seem to jump to argumentative very quickly on these posts!

You don't want to go to anything too high a yield, so EN24T for example can have a tendency to work harden, and then they shear off.

I'd start with EN16 and go from there.

Or if you do want a high quality, forged, heat treated, stress relieved steel for pence: buy some self colour 10.9 cap head bolts with a long shoulder.

Just acquired this book which will stop me wondering what is in en steels!

For the grab I've just put more long bolts in as dad wanted it back running ASAP. Will see how they go. I did notice there's a bit of wear in the eyes so might need a rebuild at some point.
