Any Barbour Jacket experts?

I have a very old Northumbria Barbour jacket, I have wondered if the fur linings are any good?
Its from the 80's so its the press stud fittings to hold it in.
They range from £20-50 on Ebay so Should I just use a fleece under it or is it worth buying the proper liner?

I never bothered with the linings usually had a shirt and jumper on underneath my Barbour. Kept me warm enough

Is it for bike riding ? The best thing I ever did with my Barbour /Belstaf gear was to bin it and buy modern gear .It was like being 30 years younger without carting all that about. Sorry didn't answer question.

No its for when I am wandering about, I have a modern Belstaff for the bikes.

I think you should buy one and try it - because I'd like to know as well.

To date, I've always used a fleece - as they don't soak up the wet too badly if it does get damp - but started looking at these fur linings with interest last year...

Ive a fleece lining for mine, like a clip in gillet. Never use it, justwear a fleece or quilted shirt. The lining us a pain

My Northumbria has had its lining ever since new. Jacket is getting all the worse for wear these days and lighter-weight jackets get much more use.

I am also looking for a light weight version for the summer as The Northumbria is very heavy. I have a thin down jacket I might try that under it?

Ive just bought a fleece for layering up under a goretex waterproof or wax jacket for being out all day on shoot days.

Ventile was the best stuff from that era...

Different tools for different jobs.
When Barbour sell Thornproof it s exactly that- on a hard shoot day a goretex would be ripped to shreds.

Goretex ain’t Goretex anymore is it? They lost the patent and now it’s just a copy of competitors products, branding masterclass though.

As above, waxed jackets were never meant to be fashion, they excel at beating through the English countryside and coming out the end of the season in one piece, whilst providing some level of waterproofing.

I have one of these black Barbours. (For clarity, not me in the photo ) It's a nice light weight and not too long. I don't wear the belt with it. Had mine a few years now and re waxed it several times. It got a nice worn look to it now. I did have a traditional Belstaff motorcycling jacket 30 odd years ago now when i was riding a motorbike daily. Really nice jacket but the price of them now is ridiculous, £500+ and theyre now more style than function. Quite fancy a traditional heavier green barbour as well though.

I’ve got that one, but wear the belt as I’ve got the additional two back pockets that hang on it - room for a few tools and first aid kit.

I've still got mine, got to be 40+ years old now, it seems to have shrunk though as it's a bit "snug" on me these days

Stupid money now.
As for Liners in general I personally find them mostly to be a waste of time because they are a "one trick pony" layer.
Whereas if you wear a fleece instead, you can remove the jacket & keep on the fleece - which you obviously can’t do with a liner.
My bike w/pf overjacket liners always ended up stuffed in a cupboard (apart from the very occasional use when a long bike journey in very cold conditions was on the cards).
