No human intervention needed. Bolt or clamp the motor to the bench. Brace the timber also to the bench. Timber on the pulley could be a smidge better than timber on the crank or big end.

Here's some pics showing what I mean, if you can block the crank with wood the only damage can be to crush the wood.

Most minimal of minimal progress.
Since the acquisition of this, I heated up the nut until it was red, and even then it took repeated smacks on the end of a 3/4 ratchet with my body holding the block to get it free… but it came.
Now I have to pull the cooling fan off the shaft. None of my many pullers will fit, unsurprisingly…

This was a most useful acquisition. The crappiest of pullers I put together using a nut welded to the threads then a bar with chain to spread on the puller. It’s not stupid if it works… but it’s more stupid than I’d have liked, what an annoying design.

After many snapped legs (re-welded countless times) she did eventually come free. Here is the offending item on its way to the bin. I can now see into the impulse area better. New gasket needs making. Pathetic progress guys, new job has sapped my energy

Ones close to running, it was driven into the shed and apparently used to slip out of third gear. The other one is the spare gearbox for the one that ran, plus anything else worth swapping. I’ll scrap it, once it’s stripped.@Dieselman 63 You're a glutton for punishment, but keep the updates coming as they're very interesting.

Got to get the timing right for the starting handle and decompression lever, or you'll never get those single cylinder JAP's started.
Flood the carb, start handle at 2-3 o'clock against compression (with thumb and fingers on the same side of the handle*), pull the decompression lever, push handle down, then as it passes 6 o'clock, release the decompression lever, and pull up the start handle for all it's worth.
*If you're stupid enough to wrap your thumb around the handle, and don't quite give it enough oomph to get that first fire over TDC, you probably won't be attempting any further starts for a while...

Today’s job. Get that second hoe off the trailer and into the workshop. The trailer belongs to my friend and goes home tomorrow, so I had to be quick. I’ve stripped all the bits I didn’t need. Used the gas to cut it, it was easier than trying to get the grinder in or using spanners on seized bolts, was also pouring down today so I just sat back and got to it.

The good one in the workshop, next to the good crawler. I’m probably going to sell the other crawler, and then scrap the remnants of the other hoe, bringing craziness down. The goal is having two small engined machines at the API show. Would still like an Allen Scythe, too…
There was one of those in a shed as well. Not seen it for a while though...
Villiers two stroke engine that was somewhat temperamental.
All came were originally bought by my grandad, and he even had a Ransomes crawler, although it was replaced by a narrow/vineyard grey fergie long before I existed.

I think the Howard is around 1953-1955. The crawler is 1950, so a good stable mate for it. Had a look at it last night as I was up at the workshop, I think it will need a lot of work but hopefully I can get it going before the 20th of Jan for the show.
I’ve been given this lovely Record 112 (says plain but it’s quick release). I was going to sell it but I think I might swap it out for my current Woden. Thought about selling the Woden, but I like that too. Might just keep both. The Woden was restored a few years ago from a red painted mess, it’s done a lot of good, hard work for me, cast steel too so 90ish years old!
