6.0mm will be okwill i get away with 6mm t & e cable (or do i need 10mm) for a 8.5 kw shower , run is about 12 m 8m threaded thru floor joists(no insuation) remaining 4 m chased into the wall.
Wired via a pull switch and 40 amp mcb and rcd of cource

before anyone says it theres a lot of variables 
clipped direct or in an insulated wall . over an insulated ceiling so drilled through beams and the last 4m buried in wall and intermittent use 6mm will be adequate generaly anything bigger than 8.5kw and run through insulation or buried i use 10.0mm

future upgrade that is a good point then you are not limited to certain shower units
You could put in 25mm three phase cables just in case you want to put in a multiheaded monster shower at a later date.
I wonder when the government will start putting eco limits on showers so that you can't have one over 12watts?
