Gearbox oil failure- grade selection help.

I’ve got an eisle cold saw that I fully rebuilt incl the gearbox with all new bearings etc. it had new oil at the time. I would say it’s had under 1 yr of heavy use since

Have had an oil leak and went to refill and the oil has gone nearly black and smells burnt!

I’m assuming I’ve got the wrong grade in there. Trouble is there’s no manuals/labels etc and I can’t seem to find any conclusive information out there on the grade. I did find reference to someone using 80w-90 so that’s what I’ve used link below.

It’s a slow running high torque gearbox with a worm drive running a bronze gear that then drives helical gears to drive the output I can get some pics if it’ll help it’s a work of art!!

Can anyone help find a more suitable grade of oil?

I think the issue is GL5 oil and your bronze gear

From memory I think GL5 eats the bronze

Not all grades of ep that are compatible with bronze gears.

On the basis that all cold saws are powered the same way, can you look to see if another manufacturer of the same machine has anything to say in its manuals?

The one in your link is GL5. With gear oils, GL4 spec. is different to GL5. I think (please do some independent verification on this) that GL4 is needed for yellow metals.

Thanks all good shout to look for other machine manuals I hadn’t thought of that this is a bit different gearbox wise to most cold saws but I know Addison and a few others made really similar saws. Eisle is now owned by behringer and still making this design so there could be potential there

this is the beast.

Looks like I’ve ******** up the selection and need gl4 (I’ll double check what exactly I have put in on Monday!) also mucked up selecting an oil seal and I damaged it at some point! (hence the leak) needed an R23 with the extra seal rather than R21 never knew there was different profiles!!

With GL5, the warmer it becomes, the more aggressive it gets.

The black will be your degraded bronze. Unfortunately.

Thanks all I’ve ordered some yellow metal safe stuff as shown above.

Just need to hunt around for an oil seal on Monday as there’s 40 lengths of stainless arriving Monday!

I've always thought it is, I use it in pretty much every gearbox I work with (vehicle or machine)

decided to give it quick google after reading this thread.... there's mixed results :-o

Not sure about that. I have rebuilt several auto boxes, and I don't recall coming across any "bronze/brass" components.

The friction discs might have some, but not sure. There trouble with this, is that it does not cause a sudden fault, just premature wear that may take several months, or a couple of years.

ISTR you need a hypoid oil because of the worm gear.

Some people (including me) use ATF in manual car gearboxes. I've personally not had any issues with yellow metal degradation.

TBH it could do with stripping and completely cleaning inside.

I’ve got the motor off and one of the side plates off so can access the interior so will give it a good clean out.

Typically the key ingredient in an EP oil is sulphur as it increases the oils shear strength, however sulphur will corrode/attack the bronze.

Try Peugeot 404 diff oil for speck these cars did huge mileages in Africa.
Yacco API GL-2, SAE 90 vegy oil was a recommended oil, so Castrol R40 should work at a push do not mix with EP or it turns to jelly
