It'll do it, but it'll be slow. I started with a 1x30", and it did me proud. Do be prepared to spend a lot of money on decent belts - I ran down to 60 grit ceramic without any issues.

Looks vaguely similar to the ones on 'Forged in fire' on the telly, it's one like theirs I'd have.

Anything above 400g tends to be a bit useless - these simply run too fast and end up scorching wood or overheating thin metal.

I have one, it's great. Really good tool. Eats through metal just fine, and good for sharpening tungstens too. The kind of thing you wonder how you ever lived without it.
Have a look for ceramic belts, they last much longer.
I found that.....so I gave up.
But to be honest everything in life is like this really.
I wanted some magnets recently but I find they are not as strong as they claim.
