Record vice parts interchangeability.

Hi all, new member here. I have recently acquired a Record no.34 QR steel vice to add to my collection and I think the lead screw/half nut may be a little worn. I am wondering if the half nut from a 35 or 36 Record vice will fit a no. 34?
The vice nips up tight, but when the jaws meet up or have anything in the jaws, I can turn the handle about a full turn before it squeezes tight. it does this like I say right along the capacity of the vice, whether the jaws are right up to each other or at max capacity and anywhere in between. None of my other QR vices do this. I've stripped it and cleaned all components and there's plenty of tension on the QR spring. It's not a major big deal but it just doesn't feel quite right. Any ideas?

i had this on an old vice not that i looked in to it much just lived with it

could it be the lead screw do this ? seams hard to belive as thought it would just slip ?

Yeah I've read a few people say that their QR vices slip or jump threads etc. and they suspect their lead screw or half nuts are shot. Mine doesn't skip or anything but there's something a little odd. Whether there's a washer missing from somewhere on the parts front I'm not sure, it's my first no. 34 so just trying to get a bit of gen.

@Asl, I honestly wouldn't give that a second thought, if I were you. QR is merely a quick general positioning mechanism. Having to do one full turn on the handle to fully clamp the piece is not unusual.

@MattF, I'm sure I can live with it like, it just feels odd compared to my other QR vices. As long as it doesn't skip or jump out, I'll live with it I suppose. I am going to strip and repaint it so looking forward to that. Do you happen to know if the half nut from a 35 or 36 will fit a 34 by any chance just out of interest?

I don't believe they're interchangeable, but I may be wrong. As far as I know, the leadscrews are different diameters on each.

Try cleaning the QR parts, some get caked in crud what will effect the workings.

One of my records do the same, as it is caked in grease, as it lives outside.

Hi, yeah, I've done that. So if I wind the jaws so they meet each other, it's about another 360 degree of the handle before they nip up tight. The QR lever is fully away from the handle so it would seem to me the half nut is fully seated over the lead screw. My other QR vices do not exhibit this trait. As others have said not to worry about it, I guess I won't, as it does lock up tight with no skipping etc.

My Woden vice has some tolerance in where the half nut sits. If you get it in the wrong place it rides over the thread and drops in.

If I read your post right, when I use the QR function and slide the jaw in or out and let go of the QR handle, sometimes the handle gets stuck halfway so the half nut doesn't seat properly. All my QR vices do that. Is that what you mean?
