When not in use, and provided they're not damaged, there isn't much risk from a LiPo.
The risk is when charging them (biggest risk is a faulty charger causing them to go over-voltage), or they're damaged.
I had a tablet do exactly that.So i came across an old phone the other day. Not been used for.. i don't actually know how long, 1-3 years i suppose.
The battery has "expanded" somehow and split the phone open. It hasn't been charged or used since it was replaced by a newer one.
Any idea why this would happen?

My Galaxy S21 is peeling apart like that, the battery doesn't seem to have expanded though, and it still works fine, so I'm ignoring it, just stick it back down occasionally. So i came across an old phone the other day. Not been used for.. i don't actually know how long, 1-3 years i suppose.

Separation of layers in the lipo.
I have an unused lipo hard-case* battery I bought a few years ago. I was disturbed to find it quite blown when I went to look for it.
I have to get rid of it responsibly by dumping it into a battery collection box sometime.
Bit of a buggre and a waste of forty quid.
*Internally, it's just a soft-bag lipo, but encased in hard plastic.
Is it diesel powered? So i came across an old phone the other day. Not been used for.. i don't actually know how long, 1-3 years i suppose.

I think it's one of those things that can randomly happen, but the usual cause is overheating. Is it just a chance thing that can happen to them, or caused by something specific? I don't recall ever having an issue with that phone.
I did once pierce a battery while opening up a phone, it caught fire, quite ferocious and quick.
Trimmed a bit more, found some problems higher up but I found some reasonable unions for proper DRT anchor and Im almost high enough to start topping it. Next I want to jump across and take down the poplar? as I'm not keen to anchor on that.An old friend wanted me to raise the skirt of these leylandii

Usually happens when they're over or under-charged and, in the case of mine, left neglected for too long.Is it just a chance thing that can happen to them, or caused by something specific? I don't recall ever having an issue with that phone.
