Could a cheap vice ever be any good?

Hi all - new to this world and just getting a bench set up for light work.

I am looking around for a vice on eBay and have found a few I would buy (with a bit of haggling) if they were in front of me at a car boot - but often the weight of them means the postage is £10+,or they must be collected, and none of them are near-by anyway.

So, I checked Amazon, and then ebay.

The question is, can anything like this ever be any good? Or should I just wait until I find a used, more trusty model?

They are £58 on Amazon and get some good reviews (if they can be trusted?)

pretty much diy and femor 60 quid should get you a nice second hand 6 inch record one or similar

I think I looked at that on last night. It's in my price range. I'm just an occasional hobbyist and won't be working anything too heavy I doubt.

I might go down there later and see if they have any in stock

I've never forgotten the experience I had with a cheap G-clamp. I tightened it up around some wood, it snapped in half in a millisecond and one half went shooting past my ear at some great velocity. It could so easily have hit my face or an eye.

in the midlands ,,, Id just look on Gumtree and find something half decent and old , but local .
The tenner you spend in fuel is the tenner you will save in postage , plus you get a day out and a bit f an explore too.

Or if you want something to your door £50, sure its going to be from a far away land but a lot of the old stuff can have had a very hard life

Going by the figures in your first post I'd say that £58 would get you a good used one on Ebay including delivery. I'll admit I've not checked now, you might have to keep an eye open until one comes up.

You're far better with something big, old and heavy but if you're struggling to find something used locally, I have one of these alongside my bigger old record vice. Not the quality of the old ones by any stretch but mine seems fine (it's around 8 years old now).

Depends if you have a toolstation near you.
