Cheapest steel suppliers you know of?

Im coming up to that time again where i need to order steel not huge amounts, Just box section and sheet mild for personal projects.
I have never had issues with the place i use but with my plasma build underway..its got me thinking whether i can save myself a few quid materials wise...

If I'm permitted to say..im currently using brundles i like the online set up its just fast convenient .
I've looked at 2 or 3 similar sites this week and and cross referenced items like sheet materials and 7mtr lengths of box section and they wasn't even competitive.
Any recommendations that deliver to east mids would be appreciated.

Brundles for me. Ideal for the hobby steel user. I try give them all my business, keep them trading.

I use Parker’s or AJN, I do buy a reasonable amount and usually minimum of 1T, mostly various sizes of box and some structural. Just looked at Brundles, for 100x50x 3, 7.5m 1bar £73.90, cheapest is £62.80 if you buy 10 or more which I guess is not too bad if you aren’t buying big quantities. I would be paying Just over £50, £1000/t at the moment. All ex vat price.

i did find a good one where i could buy mixed plate steel when i was building a rocket stove

at the time full plate sheets wasnt my thing and wasnt really needed

i was wanting mixed steel plate 5mm, 6mm and 3mm at the time the user had 3mm stainless steel box section 120x120

i bought 200.00 worth of mixed steel collection only and this is where some might think it wasnt worth it at the time it was worth highering a transit van and paying extra for fuel

van hire was 30.00 and the fuel charge was 20.00+ that gave me a good day out and loading and also i used it to go to a party

Might be worth seeing if there's a local fabricator near you? I tend to use a local trailer fabricator because they're happy to sell stuff on at cost of maybe a beer or two extra but since they buy so much weekly they get a far better price and it's usually in stock.

For stuff that's not stock they're happy to order it in for me to collect. Helps out a local business too.

There's a place in Youngstown O-HI-O that sells second quality steel very cheap.
It's off spec, hard spots, full of inclusions, etc.
Sold mainly for weight boxes.

Probably get kicked out of London by the ULEZ sadly.

I've used Brundles twice, both deliveries arrived with damage, both time their own drivers. Neither time was worth the effort dealing with returning and complaining, easier to work around it. For me it will be better to go back to the supplier I have used about 10 times over the last 20 years without issues, Mellards in Stoke on Trent, normally their steel prices are cheaper but delivery for small quantities can make them a little more expensive than Brundles. Mellards laser cutting service is good too.

I started using metals4u not super cheap but they will sell you small amounts which can be useful

Another vote for brundles for smallish quantities their probably hard to beat, there are a couple of other places locally that are probably in the same price range but being able to see all the prices on line without the need to request a quote is something I value and I generally get enough for free delivery.
if I was buying large quantities it might well be a different story

Didn't know they did steel, I use them for gib keys.

Phone through to a few of them for a quote and sit back,they are normally tripping over themselves within a week offering discounts to get the order. Nipper needed beams for his extension and did this, £300 discount on a £1500 order by just ignoring them for a few days.

Glad you've all mentioned Brundle. They're the cheapest I've found and £12 next day delivery is awesome.

I've also switched to thin wall ERW section to save money since steel prices rocketed and found the stuff to be surprisingly rigid for the weight.

I've used Brundle a couple of times and found them to be great.
Drivers so far very happy to help me walk the stuff up the lane where their lorry cant get to.

Only issue is they have not been great at letting me know when stuff is coming. Not a problem if you're are always there.

Thanks all ive been using them off n on since when they were at long eaton and used to make the trip regular from leicester... 20 or 30 years back
but i never really shopped around as they were the only real wrought iron components place i knew of back then.
There was a local fabrication place I used on occasion but they then set up a sister site selling offcuts then progressed to full on steel stockists.
looks like im sticking with brundles then,thanks.

Didn't know they did steel, I use them for gib keys.

They apparently do a lot of steel engineering but also supply as they have a lot of stock. So a win win for them.
