Most of the small engines I've worked on have had Walbro carbs, the rebuild kits for them I got off eBay have usually worked OK.

My current strimmer, a cheapy McCulloch, wouldn't start and spares from anywhere didn't seem to exist. I bought one of the generic Chinese 11mm carbs, I was going to pinch the gaskets, diaphragms etc out of it but in the end I fitted the whole thing, fired up first time and didn't even need adjusting.

It can be the difference between an uneconomical repair and seeing a good few years more service out of a product , they are all made in that neck of the woods anyway.

I repaired one of these a while back, used for cutting concrete.

It had been run with no air filter until it died basically. Well it did start with a lot of effort.

The barrel and piston were completely worn out, basically sand blasted to death!.

Some of the Chinese carbs had issues with the metal being porous.

For my Suzuki Jeep a knock off carb was £200, a genuine Weber £300.... so I go for the Weber because poor running or future problems will cost me more. My Yamaha outboard, £130 for genuine, £50 for knock off.... do I want to risk problems or the engine dying while a big ship is approaching for the sake of £80 ? Nope.

I also think there's a difference between genuine carbs being made in China, to western standards, vs one designed and sold directly from China. China is good at copying but there's a lot more to production than that. For example metallurgy is complex and took the west decades to master, China is still on that journey. That's why they couldn't even produce their own ballpoint pen tips until 5 years ago.

West is now trying to wean itself off Chinese products, so it'll be interesting to see what happens with their industry, economy and ambitions for world domination.

Funny I did the same on my brother's Stihl strimmer at the weekend. Original Stihl carb was made in China too. I was shocked when it started first pull.

Zama and Walbro are made in China but there are different makers doing copies of them, some identical some not so. I usually fit a diaphragm kit and clean them out with carb clean and airline. It's usually the metering side gone a bit baggy that causes most problems I find.

Yep. And not just carbs.

I had a local independent AC specialist put a new compressor in my Saab, the original did 140,000 miles so can't really complain.

18 months later it needed another one, the UV dye showed the refrigerant had all percolated out through the housing rather than anything in particular springing a leak.

The guy was quite apologetic about it but it's a case of getting what you pay for, a new OEM compressor would have cost more than the car.

I rebuilt a Stihl TS350 stone saw using Chinese piston, barrel, crank etc, I did buy decent bearings and seals though.
It runs fine after a bit of carb fettling.

I use knock off piston and barrels, mainly because I’m tight !

They were pretty good, I only needed to clean up the port edges and piston with a bit of emery cloth. I resisted doing a porting job on it though

No idea why but it always strikes me as an odd place to make carburettors.

Well, they made VW Beetles until 2003 so why not other automotive components?
