Broadband problem

Hello all,
I am with Tiscali (Talk Talk). Every few seconds my Broadband connection fails. I get a message saying “Error 680 there was no dial tone”. Well there is a dial tone. I have phoned them up, there is some engineering work, I don’t know if this affects me though. The help desk chap just talks me through reinstalling the software, which makes no difference.
So, does anyone know a fix for this problem please, or can someone recommend a more reliable provider?

I am now with titan adsl & have had a constant 4mbs+ since I changed ( from bt who basically told me the problem was mine [at 120kbs] on the same kit) & now get upset when I am extremely rude to their telesales people despite telling them to take me off their caller list & not bother me again because they could not pay me enough to go back..... ditto tiscali a year or so earlier

normally about 5.6mbs, 24/7, no drop outs, no throttling or "traffic shaping" ie cutting your speed because they dont have the equipment to cope, UK support by people who know what they are talking about & actually come across as if they want to help

Been with them since feb 09 & dont see me moving anytime soon.

They just do broadband, not phone etc.

and they do a 1 month contract with 30 days notice..... If they want you tied in for a year or more (TT tried to talk me into a 2 year contract recently) IMO they have no confidence in the quality of the service they are offering

Have you tried a different microfilter? Do you have the modem plugged into your master phone socket? Has it EVER worked?

we used to have tiscali in the old days of ial up and they where fine but ive heard there broadband isn't so good, im with bt broadband but becuase im in a rural area even this is slow and wont run more than one website

Also with Tiscali (Talk Talk).
We've been having probs for a few mths, connection often fails & can take 15/20mins to reconnect (we have a "speedstream" box with a reset button).

Speed is like snails in glue (nice recipe ), 0.4mb NOT the promised 'upto 5mb'

Thanks for that link, just had a look on their site, seems to be quite good. Definitely better than Orange who are my current provider. Been having issue with them for ages, throttling, dire peak time speed etc. The max speed I've ever seen is 300k !! Just hope Titan is available in my area !

There are many factors that can cause this type of problem.

thing to check are:
filters should be on every extension
check the router in the master socket
do an isolation test. The newer faceplates have a removable fron and a hidden socket behind. this isolates the extensions ans proves off your internal wiring.
fi an interstitial (F**k knows where they get these names from) this effectively removes the ring pair from the wiring ans this can cause interference.
try a different router
check the line quality figures. you will have loop loss or line attenuation. this needs to be as low if its near 60dB you will have problems there is also SNR this needs to be high. if its single figures there's usually problems
check the sync and speed.

if its not the router or internal wiring the next culprit is the line. this is supplied by openreach and is yours even if you change llu supplier, they just have different kit in the exchange and backhands to their respective networks.

to test the line do a quiet line test

on a bt line call 17070 and select option 2. the line will go silent and there should be no noise atall. if there is call the BT and have then fix that first. this is unrelated to broadband so don't mention it or they will fob you off. other llu suppliers should have similar.

if all the above are correct then the supplier has poor quality dslams in the exchange and the only wat is to change supplier if its llu. it its not llu then the supplier uses BT's kit and atm network to backhaul to their network


What type of service have you got? upto 24Meg or 8 Meg or a fixed rate 2m, 1mg, or 500k?
what sync speed are you getting. ignore speed tester sites its the speed the router syncs at that is crucial here
what are the line attn and SNR? this will give an indication of the what the sync speed should be
if you have a high speed and poor figures than there will be problems. a line card reset should fix that or the supplier may be able to force the sync speed down which will trade off speed for reliability.

all this is not gleaned form forums and here-say etc its my job!

We have been on talk talk for about 8 months and get a reliable connection at up to 19.5mbps. It sounds like you are trying to connect through a dial up modem if no dial tone is detected.

have you got a virus or something broadband doesnt use a dial tone.
how old is you computer and does it have a built in modem for dialup as the dialup modems do look for a dial tone

Believe it or not it is quite rural where I live so may not be lucky changing to another provider. We are just off the mains for everything.

It is on the main socket; I will have a try with new filters, but don’t hold out much hope. It did work as others have said until Talk Talk took them over.

Some people are never satisfied, someone complaining on that site if they lose their connection after 15 mins. I now have repetitive strain injury from clicking the redial button every 2 mins.

The modem is a Speedtouch 330. Pooter is about 4years old, I don’t think there is a built in modem. Just some valves that light up when they get warm, some cat’s whiskers, and a few cogs and pulleys, all the usual stuff really.

I now have repetitive strain injury from clicking the redial button every 2 mins.

In internet explorer, go to tools - internet options - connections. Click on your adsl connection in the dialup & virtual network settings box then click the settings button, now by the username click properties and in the options tab put a tick in the box marked redial if line dropped.

I cant fault them, personal experience has been excellent

speedtouch adsl modems frequently have this problem ime best bet is netgear.
