No need - if one already has one.

if you just want to get it away just get a bit of inch round bar 1 inch long drill down 3/4 way through with a drill bit slightly bigger than the ball clamp it in then peen over round the edges to stop it falling out

Washer with hole slightly smaller than diameter of ball. Slit with hacksaw, bend and helix into place. Make it flat again.
Nut that has ID slightly bigger than OD of ball and height roughly the same as ball diameter. Drilling out the threads of the nut is a bonus.
Flat plate with OD slightly bigger than across points dimension of nut.
Weld as required.

My thoughts on this?

a) was just an excuse - very basic lathes go cheep, cheep, cheep (they can also be very cheap to buy )

b) an acceptable reason - but there are some who use their lathe on small boats, and even inside their home.

Where there is s will, there is a way!

I always consider whether the affixed parts may need to be replaced in the future. Welding is good for permanent fusion of metals, but likely needs cutting if future replacement is necessary.

Not sure they go cheep, cheep in Portugal. And then there's all kinds'a tooling etc needed. I'm working my way towards building a workshop but it's only going to be tiny 3m x 3m. I did see a monster lathe at one of the local scrappies.

If they made decent feet for cheapo G-Clamps then none of it would be necessary. A welded-on foot likely wouldn't need to be replaced in the future and, as you say, could be easily enough cut off and another one made.
