Great place to live I've been told . Lot's of things to do and places to spend money. Full of lovely people who only want to help and make sure you have a nice time.
A young lady I worked with who lived in Chiswick area asked me to describe the area around my area. Wiltshire no street lights etc etc. she replied that she couldn't live in the country because where could she buy a burger at 2AM like she could from the petrol station across the road from her house.

What are you trying to do ? You will soon have hoards of southerners pushing the prices of everything out of the reach of the locals and will end up as badly off as before . find a piece of heaven and keep quiet just enjoy .

Most English refuse to move north of the border. I think Aberdeenshire and Moray offer really good value for money at the moment, especially Aberdeenshire as unlike a lot of other places in Scotland the property prices haven't been pushed up due to influx of tourists etc.

alot of the southerners wont like the cold above yorkshire thats for sure

so i dont think theres much worry there

its the living wage you need to be worried about

you moved from london back to irland and then went back

you need to work out what your job pays and how much it cost to live there

and then what you can earn back home and how much it cost to live there

housing costs are im sure very different between to 2 unless your going to commute from home to london and pay digs for the week

Chiswick is maybe one of the few nice areas for suberbia , I can tell you most of it is s*!t hole supreme
I can give a list of places in london I think are nice , it's not a very long list ,

I say this as I life long resident.

I couldnt live down there as my previous employer wouldnt stump up for a house with acres, barns and 3/4 mile of salmon fishing on the relocation package….HR woman thought I was extracting the Michael, till I demonstrated other wise.

To have a reasonable life in London I reckon requires earnings north of £60k pa if you are renting. If you own something then it's a bit different.

Ealing used to be nice but they've mostly ruined it with tower blocks so isn't what it was like 20 years ago unfortunately .

Strand on the green is nice (that's where my dentist is)...but it's not affordable for the average person I think.

Wages are low where I live in West Wales, & while property isn't of course anything like London prices - relative to wages property is expensive.
It's one of the penalties of living in a rural area that's accessible & where property isnt expensive (if youre moving here, & the M4 Corridor might end near Cross Hands, but dual carriageways reach within 15-miles of Pembrokeshire).

But..... I know I live somewhere pretty decent, & I appreciate that. The very thought of living in a city in some shoe-box gives me the heeby-geebies.

I like visiting London, so much good stuff to see and do. The museums are out of this world and they do a good pub too. I like watching Londoners as they just go about their day in their own world and the crowds and traffic etc doesn't bother them at all. Me it's like sensory overload. I enjoy visiting but just too big and busy for me.

I have worked in London in one capacity or another for just short of 20 years and I love the place, I really do. But I am very glad I don't live there. It's like New York (somewhere else I lived, for eight years) I love New York too but I would need a salary of $250,000 to live there now. The best part of both places is I can leave and come home and go back later.
Just yesterday I received a call from a lawyer in London who wants me to work for them in my "expert witness" capacity. It pays well but some of the solicitors and KC's are so far up themselves it is bloody nauseating.

Yup...I was offered a job there...but when I looked at the cost of accommodation it was insane.

I'd say you were right on your salary expectations!

I would suggest looking for a mundane job, say doing trunker driving for tesco , where you earn a reasonable wage to pay for living but its not taxing on the brain or body , then in your spare time set up work shop or similar and do what you like . I met a guy who was doing this , trunking from south to north london, kipping in cab for three hours while they unloaded and re loaded truck, then back down. where he would as he put it snuggle up with the misses, get up lunchtime and go do gardening etc in the afternoon ..he was not only happy bit doing very well.

Old houses always need work. But have something about them Id not seen til I bought one, its like you dont own it, only its keeper till the next one.

The buyer of this place is in for a surprise, I don't care who they are, they will have to have the right attitude or they won't be buying it.

In 1985 I was on £55k a year and could barely make ends meet, I know it sounds insane but try living there. In many ways though I do rather wish I had stayed. Ho Hum, we makes our choices..........

Not insane at all...rent for a nice flat these days is maybe £24k..and that's taken from net pay so £60k gross ain't really a lot if you are renting.

DFL = down from London

Its not just Norfolk…..its everywhere. In reality 40 or so years ago, if you had a real job, saved a bit for a deposit a youngish working man could buy a house with a 3 time salary mortgage. Now there are less real jobs paying a decent wage, and house prices have inflated for many reasons, supply and demand due to cheap money being available, inflation etc. So now most younguns need a far higher salary multiplyer to buy a house.
