Whats the failure mode on cooker hoods ?

Only had this one up a couple of years. It had started not running on setting 1, but if you set it to 2 or 3 then down to 1 it would run. Its now lifeless on all settings.

Motor turns freely.

Is it likely to be the cap, or maybe burnt out windings ? Anyone had similar and managed a fix

how old is it comes to mind

usually its the switches that go faulty on them but they take alot of heat being above a stove

I too would go for contactors in switches - that what was wrong wiht mine.

I not long overhauled the one in our kitchen - I changed motor/cap'/bulbs/fitlers and switch gear.

Reason being - it was so well tiled and grouted in - it was easier to overhaul it in situ - than dig it out and buy a new one!

Ill have another go tomorrow with it unplugged. The voltages seemed ok but could be stray voltages.

A new one of the same model is £65 online which probably says a lot about the build quality

bin it and get a new one might be ok fannying about and try fixing it if it will .i wont even entertain looking at them at work unless the bulbs pop the fuse

I won’t be spending ages on it at £65 for a new one

if you have a capactor on there its worth a shot to change it

most of the time is the capactor the motor will hum when turned on (not all the time ive near been cought like that before )

if you apply power and give the fans a turn it will normal run and that proves its the capactor

if you try spinning it do it with out getting your fingers in the way or any objet that can damage the fan blades



mine when it went wrong turns out the a screw had come loose and the blades where hitting the case and thats why it made a bad noise could even be that

Purchased a complete new extractor with chimney & glass hood . Bare bones stuff was not compatible neither was the new unit so no swapping things out . .
New kitchen fitted in 2008 switches died on extractor number 1 in 2011 possibly due to lightening strike 400 mtrs away , Second unit motor died on extractor windings , noticed a little bit of grease on the filter screen was this the problem ?

Fitted a new complete set up talmolkst a year ago .
Now I have three aluminium filter screens , once a month the one in use gets removed & sprayed with elbow grease degreaser, left for 10 min . re-sprayed and nail brushed then rinsed in very hot water and put through the dishwasher so as to keep the load of the air being dragged through the screen as light a possible .

Having the three screens also means if we notice the current in use filter screen getting greasy we have two clean ones to replace the greasy one with .
I've also replaced all the white wrinkly plastic metal hooped outlet pipe with 110 mm plastic soil pipe that runs through the roof void ( bungalow ) slightly down hill to the outside gable end so it can easily be cleaned of grease & gunge in a few years time .
I've also inserted a small heat resisting three pin plug & socket in the power feed cable so disconnect for removal is a doddle on the next extractor unit replacement ......so to wire up the new unit on the kitchen table not on a set of steps .

the switching system is usually a little board of electronics which is astronomically expensive to replace. I binned it and fitted a 24o volt appliance switch controlling both the lights and the fan on full speed,, cost about £3, still going 3 years later, its always the electronics that doesnt need to be there that quits!!

Thought Id had a breakthrough when I discovered a thermal fuse in the motor. Changed it, relubricated the bearings, but the winding that the capacitor goes across is o/c. Off to screwfix

its a house not an industrial kitchen we rarely have 3 phase in houses unless its massive and have night storage heaters as well

his wife's range vent with more power, IIRC it removed his shirt.

"Self cleaning" now applies not just to the oven, but the whole kitchen...and any one in it....

Could extend it to the rest of the house…makes the vacuum cleaner redundant…
