Any model train builders on here ?

Hi
fancy having a dabble in model train s, steam, just been offered a part built one , plans are from hobbystore which went to the wall a while back , it states on plan Metro , if that tells you anything . So the one thing that seems to be missing thats obvious is wheel castings , so my first question is are castings available and approx price , and whats the value of a part built , (just the chassis started so far.)
any and all advice appreciated . cheers

I dont know ! about 16" long so the guy tells me , he is going to try and send some more pics tonight as originals were more than my server could cope with , think he needs to turn down the pixels or what ever the modern term is on computers,resolution.
anyways I could possibly put a few pics on here when I get them.

Post some pictures when you get them. Buying a part built loco can be a nightmare as some builders make a mess of it and then stop....

Good idea to join your local Model engineering club as you'll get lots of help and advice....

Metro was a 5" gauge Martin Evans design.

Is the boiler there? likely to be significant expense if one needs constructing, and it will need hydraulic and steam test certificates before you can use it anywhere other than at your own place.

i have a set of castings made by norman spink for a 5 inch gauge simplex o60 tank engine by martin evans . had them 50 years and thats as far as its got its a bit dodgy buying a part built engine if theres any discrepancy or alterations to plans , the copper parts to build the boiler cost a fortune

Not sure. I think the BiL has them now. If I think I'll get him to dig them out.

Im guessing its likely to a 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 inch gauge engine, in which case there are loads of half finished chassis about, unless its something special, you'd be better off starting from scratch as they start getting expensive if you're needing to buy (or make) boilers as even small boilers can be £1000 for materials or £2000 ready built and certified.

surely if you start from scratch you still need to pay for boilers /materials. ?

yeah so what sort of budget are you looking at? you havnt provided alot information so far, building model steam trains can be an expensive hobby and also take thousands of hours, thats why I only make small models, when some of my model engineering friends can pay hundreds of pounds for a single casting, I'm building complete projects for less that £100.
