NASA loses Contact with Voyager 2

Contact with Voyager 2 has been lost after a ground controller sent it the wrong command . It's been flying along nicely since 1977, so this seems like a "bit of a shame".

The best that they can hope for now is that the spacecraft periodically does it's own re-boot, and will do so in October, so they hope they might get it back then.

Not sure why that matters; the operating manuals are still around, no doubt revised many times, but it seems as if one person having a bad day can do stuff like this.

NASA isn’t Wendy’s, you need proper qualifications to get a job there (no insult to service workers intended, without them most of the USA would starve to death).

Not even daddy gifting a couple of million dollars to build a gym there will cut it. These are clever people doing amazing stuff, no quotas about it.

There was a wonderful Radio 4 play many decades ago, I think it was called ‘Neil Armstrong stole my space suit”. All about the women astronauts who lost their chances to go into space, even though they aced the men during training. Couldn’t have “The Ladies” doing something better (or dying) while there were manly military men around. I shall go, google, and return.

It appears he said that to cover the fact that all the older and wiser engineers told him “naw”. He could only get the younger/inexperienced engineers to be daft enough to take his word that all was well. Nothing to do with equality, or quotas, or anything else.

Chap I know is high up in a UK satellite firm but at a practical level. He's gotten a personal thank you letter from NASA, in his workshop I seem to recall, in amongst his multiple, homebrew VFDs. Clever? Just a bit.
