Stripping?

This casing has been painted with emulsion and probably other coats of unknown paint underneath. I'd like to use it for display..it does actually still work!
I'm not sure if i should leave as is or strip the paint off and make it look original. Photo shows the wood (untouched) on the inside
If i use say paint stripper then wire wool to avoid damging the wood, then oil it, would i get a reasonable finish?
Anyone recognise the wood type? Mahogany?
It's got VIR cable in the back so dates it somewhere between 1910 and 1950

When I was a teenager, the house a mate lived in had one of those in the kitchen & from what I recall all the buttons in the various rooms still worked.

So,

Yes it's probably a mahog variety, a gentle a stripper will work well, though the wood will likely be patchy as it would have oxides differently over the years.

Oiling might be ok not my favourite options, I think I would remove the paint and decide

, it might need bleaching to get a one uniform colour.

If you want it to look like dark mahog the options are potassium dichromate or stain, as a home job I'd look at a stain though this can be patchy and if it's too dark its too dark.

Alternatively you can use a tinted french polish, though this can't look like it's applied on top.



I would say the hardest part of my apprenticeship with a traditional cabinet maker was learning how to polish.

Our old Victorian terraced house in Wantage still had the cables and cranks for the bell pulls, and that wasn’t a large house but presumably had some staff

We also lived in a huge old house when I was a kid and that had a board in the kitchen where all the bells used to be. There was only one left and the cable ran all the way through the house to the front door and a wonderful curved brass bell pull. It still worked beautifully.

When I was but a nipper, we moved into a house that had both bell pulls and a box like that in the ‘scullery’ as well as having a loggia (albeit no bell pull in this area)…

Not saying it was back in mid-history, but my hard done-by parents paid the vast sum of £7,250 for this particular pile!!

I'd strip it sand it and live with it a while....can always add something later on if the need arises....theres no rush.

In my house reinstating that to functioning condition would most likely end with me wearing a cup of tea
