Cars, Mazda6 estate petrol?

I need a car and I like the Mazda6 estate, from what I have seen it will be big enough. My brother has just bought a 2017 diesel. However I'm learning their current diesel engines (2012 onwards) can have some issues with injectors leaking and lubrication failure, seems like they are to be avoided?
It seems they reduced compresion ratio, so fuel efficiency is not as good as a diesel normally would be. Petrol will never be quite as good but as theirs are direct injection, should be better than most older cars?

Is the Mazda6 petrol a safer bet?

Which engine is it?

From experience, the 2016 2 litre petrol mazda 3 runs fine and is pretty economic. low to mid 40s mpg in an automatic with a mix of driving

Mate had a diesel Mazda, could have been a 6, that was fitted with the 2.2 Transit engine. Even though mileage it needed new crank and rods. He's now bought a 3/4 year old diesel Mazda 3 as needed a smaller car for where he now lives and again the engine needs a rebuild !

I’ve had two, but older, one being petrol and the other diesel.
There aren’t many engines made after 2010 that don’t have injector issues. Pick any make and it’ll have an engine that’s prone for them.
I actually liked my Mazdas, the petrol had a really heavy clutch which they were renowned for though.
The diesel engines are a bit of an oddity though. They have a really weird system (egr maybe?) that basically fills the sump with diesel. There are three levels on the dipstick, empty full and fuller. If the oil gets to the top of the filler bit the oil needs draining and changing. Stupid idea really…
I was decent on fuel, drove well with plenty of power and other that the filling of the sump issues I don’t think they’re terrible, the 2.2 from 2012 had timing chain issues but this was sorted by the later versions and the newer ones are meant to be decent.

These Mazdas are odd. First dipstick I have ever seen - with a min max mark and then a third mark - an "X" way above these normals marks.

Does "X" mean point of run a way?

Sump filling is down to regen - and these Mazdas eat DPF filters - which cost the earth.

Our Mitsubishi Outlander 2.3 diesel had a dipstick the same extra mark, the level crept up slightly between services so no problem, the Vauxhall Zafira SHOULD have had an extra mark but didn't, that used to fill up all the time, rubbish car.
I don't think theres a good reason now to buy a diesel over a petrol car as the diesels are so unreliable now anyway.
I'd get a petrol and as said above, buy a Toyota.

How things have changed. 20 years ago if you wanted a long lasting reliable car you bought a diesel.

Have to laugh at this sump filling malarkey, manufacturers bang on about how you must use this oil or that and then when it comes to recalls find a degree of acceptability in mixing it with diesel.

My 1999 Skoda Octavia 1.6 petrol Estate will do 40mpg+ driven somewhere not too stop/start & lumpy, (& driven like a stingy Nun). Not amazing but certainly not too shabby.
(It'll also do more like 30mpg too mind, driven with more gusto around lumpy Welsh lanes).
The 1.9tdi will do more mpg, but would have cost me a chunk more, for a starship mileage car with more likely big bills... so I was happy to go petrol.

Newer diesels with all the gubbins & expense freak me out tbh - I'd not want to spend my own dosh on one, even though they drive nicely.

That's before the manufacturers were made to add all the envirocobblers to them.
The irony is that the government are now forcing all the reliable older cars off the road to be replaced by this unreliable toss that needs scrapping after a few years, still, it keeps the brown envelopes flowing

This.... is what irks me and makes a mockery of the "save the environment" rubbish we are fed to try to justify the forcing towards "eco-friendly" modern dross. It's IMO a blatant lie.
Force out reliable existing vehicles, force the consumer to have a short-life manufactured replacement which has to be replaced regularly (& require regular costly service, while quickly becoming uneconomical to repair).
It's all about forced increased consumption to facilitate increased revenue - using the convenient (& very, very flimsy) pretty transparent excuse of saving the planet.

The irritating thing is - is just how many people blindly accept the "green" excuse without questioning it, & in so doing ignorantly facilitate the process.
Ultimately & given enough time - what will reduce car emissions isn't the tech - it'll be that the vast majority won't be able to afford to run a car resulting in lower overall pollution.

When regen occurs, it floods with fuel to raise the dpf temperature and burn it out, or the large amount of exhaust gas recirculation causes the intake and injectors to soot up, this seems more likely to me but cars without DPF still use EGR...

It's failed regens that fills the sump. You're correct it adds extra fuel but if you're only doing short mileage it never gets up to temp and the bonus fuel ends up in the oil..and it makes the DPF situation worse.

I had an Octavia diesel on hire - I have a very heavy right foot and got 53mpg. The most I have ever seen on any car. The petrol version I got 24mpg. I love petrol engines but they don't like me
