gas regulator advice

hi peeps
i use a Clarke 151 TE turbo mig & iam also using the regulator that came with the welder
i dont weld loads
EG: every day/weekend but when i do i want things right,how could i get around the bottle running out part way though & can these regulators be set so"s not to waste gas or do i just turn it to full,,ive thought about the per year payment thing & then i could get a regulator for said bottle with a twin gauge,,would you advice on this,,i mainly weld steel but iam thinking of making my own veg oil aux tank from ally.

You can get a peashooter to check the gas flow at the torch (one of these - http://www.weldequip.com/gas-flow-tester.htm ). You'll be able to fine tune the reg setting a little. Wouldn't hold out too much hope - fully on is normally as close as disposable regulators get.

There are a couple of cheaper choices for refillable bottles - see the stickies in the shielding gas section. For aluminium you would need pure argon, but for steel it's much better to have an argon/CO2 mix.

Is it practicable to turn the disposable bottle regulator fully on, and then use the other type of pea-shooter device (Gas Flowmeter from the shop at £13.80) for the actual flow control?

The way I look at it, gas in disposables is so expensive that accurate flow control must be far MORE important than when using large bottles.
