I have a square top Student and no idea what they are......owned it for 20 plus years.......

Guessing a few letters, they say 'roundness and surface finish test piece turned on this lathe'.

They would have been samples/give aways from a trade show.

If the person to whom it was given had the correct metrology kit, they could measure the roundness (Talyrond) and finish (Talysurf) to assess if the manufacturer's claims about the machine's ability was truthful.
