Latching relay

Does such a thing exist as a latching relay(im thinking 5 pins) that will latch on with a pulse then switch power the opposite way when another pin has a pulse go down it?

Im trying to get a 2 way solenoid valve to latch on once a sensor is triggered then when a release button is pressed for it to reset until the sensor is triggered again

You could do that with a normal relay... use 1 set of contacts to maintain

Like a watchdog timer? One where you can vary the pulse count timer and if the pulse falls outside time window you get an error output?

I'd say more like a flip flop relay.

A flip flop relay has a changeover tho?

What it is is a pneumatic clamp that is triggered by a ultrasonic sensor when a object passes by within 50 to 200mm

The problem is the objects are a irregular size so with the current setup it starts to clamp then releases if a thin part of the object passes the sensor if that makes sense?

I want it to latch on and keep clamping as soon as it detects a signal from the sensor

I then need a button to press(well a footpedal to be precise but i can manage that bit) that cuts the power to the relay and powers the clamp open-footpedal will be continously held until the object is released and fully past the sensor to prevent it sensing it again and trying to reclamp

I've managed the welding and pneumatic side of it simple enough but me and electrics don't mix very well!

For what you want you could just use a normal relay.
Wire the sensor feed to the coil then take a wire (call it X) from the output of the relay to the coil as well.

Then, Fit a normally closed switch to interrupt wire X when pressed.

The 'RUN' switch is your sensor (normally open) and the 'STOP' switch is the foot pedal (normally closed). Relay contact 2 switches the pneumatic gripper.

Can't power still bypass the relay then tho even when i press the footpedal it could go direct from the sensor input across to relay contact 2 due to contact 1 being shut?

Im thinking i need a footswitch that can turn off 2 circuits? And then also turn on the release circuit so im into a 3 pole footpedal? Does such a thing exist?

For this application have you considered a small programmable relay? Like Siemens logo or the RS pro version (link below)??

If you are happy playing around with coding then an arduino or similar would be even cheaper.

Put your foot pedal to one input, the sensor to another and then write some logic to control the output to how you want it.

You might think it’s overly complicated but it allows you endless flexibility to change things without buying additional hardware or messing with wiring, plus you can add timers, add filters to the inputs, counters, so press 1 will do X, press 2 will do Y then reset - etc etc….the worlds your lobster Rodney.

You don't need to make it that complicated,
Just connect the sensor trigger wire in upstream of the foot switch.

If there are some sort of fancy electronics coming out of the ultrasonic then, at most, all you will need is a 2-pole nc contact in the foot switch (or a 2nd, normal relay)

The thing to think about is that it will simplify your wiring, plus you will have flexibility to change things much easier in the future than adding extra hardware. But yes, I agree if you are not confident enough to use them then probably better sticking with a hardwired solution.

The dotted line is not a connection, it's just to indicate that contact 1 and 2 are closed by energising the coil.

Reading your requirement again the highlighted bit in the text above suggests to me that you would be better using something programmable - if you build the circuit the decide you need to add timers, filters etc later then it becomes a pain in the ass.

The smart relay has all these built in, you just need to program it and turn them on rather than ordering more bits. It certainly sounds like something that hat would be perfectly suited to a small logo/Zelio or similar.

Sorry to sound stupid but i don't get then how switching the sensor wire off via a footpedal will switch the relay off as isnt it effectively "self feeding" itself once latched on?

Once its wired in like this no timers etc shouldn't be needed its used with animals so timers etc dont really work as it all depends on how fast each one moves
