I changed the grease on it today and seems to be running a little bit cooler. I changed it over to that full synthetic Super Lube grease.if you use it long enought yes i used a muli tool for a long time and that was getting hot to touch so much so i stoped every so offten to let it cool down
if its the gear box thats hot could do with some grease put in there ?
The way this grinder is set up, if I put too much grease in there, it blocks the airflow from the fan. I have to be real careful.Be careful with grease though, its a high speed tool and needs the CORRECT grease.
I once regreased an angle grinder for this reason, and it made it even hotter !
Got to be careful not to overfill - with a sealed gearbox with nowhere for the excess grease to go, it will heat up and fail. For machinery with regular relube intervals (to supply fresh grease due to heat, speed, life etc) you design in grease valves to allow the excess to vent without damage to seals etc.Be careful with grease though, its a high speed tool and needs the CORRECT grease.

I think the gears are shimmed to get the right clearance. I vaguely remember buying one years ago that had zero backlash between the gears, so I adjusted it and it ran cooler.
I've been running the Benchmark cut-off wheels quite a bit lately. The grinder is a Bosch 1375A. It does quite well, but I was concerned about the heat build up in the gear housing. I have since cleaned out the gear housing and applied Super Lube grease #21030. The grinder seems to be doing better, although still not running ice cold. Thank You for your reply. What discs/consumables are you using?
You might want to look at something more effective, or use a bigger grinder.
Although I've had mine running too hot to touch with no ill effects before
even with the propper stuff and amount it will still get fairly warmI've been running the Benchmark cut-off wheels quite a bit lately. The grinder is a Bosch 1375A. Metabo is my favourite grinder, Makita are cheaper, but do the job.as said buy decent grinders and decent consumables, i am a huge fan of metabo at the minute with the dewalt extreme diamond metal cut off blades and 3m cubiton2 fibre discs.
cutting 12mmx200mm i beams above head with a 125mm grinder as thats all i could get in for two days, grinders got rather warm but not hot and i was really pushing on them,
beveling 6mm plate was to much for the makitas ive used before and changing discs every few minutes is a ball ache
Is this the one you equippped with the "Most agressive possible" wheels ?Is it normal for a grinder to get so hot that you can't touch the metal gear housing? Talking about a right angle grinder.
Yes I was trying to equip it with the most aggressive wheel. That was until I found out that it's faster to cut the weld out with two intersecting slices using a cut-off wheel. Is this the one you equippped with the "Most agressive possible" wheels ?
