Swivel castors?

The swivel castors I fitted to the bench I made turned out to be less than durable. So does anyone have a recommendation for a source or make of castor which are suitable for using under a mobile steel bench? I'd say max weight including the bench will be 300 - 400 kg, wheel dia would need to be 100mm plus, the surface it's running on is an old brick floor, the top plate would need to be suitable for welding to the legs.

I'm not after the cheapest, I just want 'fit and forget' that will deal with the above.

I've had castors from Machine Mart on a few of my sturdy benches for around 10 years with no issues. Go for at least 4" diameter and 110kg+ rating and they're fine.

Now a proper answer look on Faceach market place etc for something old with castors and just fit them.

I have cast iron wheeled castors that were rated at something like 250kg each so maybe worth considering them rather than plastic, rubber or nylon wheels ?

The wheels themselves have held up fine, it's the swivel that has fallen apart. I wondered where the ball bearings had come from on the floor, the answer is China via the castor swivel. That said, I don't really care what the wheels are made of as the bench doesn't get moved around a lot, it's just a convenience for when it does.

I rarely use Machine Mart as the nearest one is a real pain to get to and park and the next nearest is quite a trip.

I've got a set of trolley castors somewhere - found a mangled up trolley dumped by the side of the road so did my civil duty of tidying it up. You are welcome to them if of any use.

Kind of you to offer, but if they didn't crumble under the weight of the empty bench they'd fold the first time it moved.

The bench is over 100kg with nothing on it, and at the moment it has a quarter of a tonne of Ski-Doo sat on it. I'm sure shopping trolley castors will be able to deal with more than a big shop, but probably not that much more.

get some nylon the same dia as ur's ...quite cheap.....drill a hole for the bearings and ur done.....
make em as wide as poss.......
the metal bits are ok but rubber tyres are sh*te.......
thats all Ive ever done.....they will last years....
now have trouble with fluff in the axles....

It's the swivel part that's given way, the wheels themselves are fine. I haven't flipped the bench for a proper look yet as it's in use (as above) but it looks like the bearing which surrounds the swivel pin has given up and the ball bearings have dropped out.

I over rate castors and axle stands, it's quite possible that 1 out of a set of 4 could take much more load than the other 3.

I didn't consider Toolstation, the plate being 5.5mm is better than a lot I've looked at. There's a Toolstation just round the corner from the workshop too.

Direction change being slow isn't an issue as movement is ponderous anyway and it's mostly swinging one end over. There's room round it so it's easy enough to move it in a short arc left or right to change from forward to backward making life easier on me and the wheels.

I opted for the 150mm rather than the 100mm to raise the bench height by an inch as with some stuff it was just a tad low. Massively better quality castors than the previous ones which I bought online. Once I'd stripped the Ski-Doo and flipped the bench (god bless gantry cranes!) to see what had happened it was obvious that the very light IMHO swivel bearing cup, and so the wheel were just held in position by a bit of peening. All done now, much better and rolls a lot easier too.

I've two sets of these on trolley/benches I made, they needed to be big as they would moving in a gravel/dirt yard

Did the castor come with a grease nipple or did you fit it? Either way that's a nice addition

They came with nipples fitted. Just a much better quality castor altogether, thicker metal for the bolt on plate, bigger bearings, bolted rather than just peened etc etc. They weren't that much dearer either at £18;00 per castor.

I've got a set of MM castors on some homemade skates for moving machinery

Probably about 5yrs old now but have moved several lathes that were around 750kg, a few milling machines and a great big heavy hydraulic press that I collected for @God mode restorations

Still working well, currently got a big scissor lift stacked on them so I can move it around the lockup till I get the slab done
