I’ve got an old Garmin.
In settings you can choose to avoid
U turns, highways, toll roads ferries and car pool lanes, just tick the boxes.

On the route preferences you can choose fastest time, shortest distance or go off road.

You can also choose a vehicle which can be car, bicycle or pedestrian.

See what yours are set to.

i figured shortest distance is where ii would take a narrow lane to save a few feet

We have a garmin unit, it likes the scenic routes ( never use it now) The inbuilt one we have now is brilliant, very accurate. Even knows when you change lane

Im the same , a zumo on the bike , Ive been using Garmin for twenty years and you just get used to the way they work ,,, I dont know why its on the bike as I know most of the roads in this paart of the world , but every once in a while you spot something youve not seen , rather than getting me from a to b , I tend to use it as a distraction spotter ,,, still like it there though.

My Garmin is invaluable for finding places in the cities and abroad on holiday, makes driving abroad less stressful - I would be lost without it Our car is 8 years old, the satnav Toyota software omits half the roads round me, particularly single track.

DVLA have several postcodes for, presumably, the same building. Probably the same is true for gov't deparments.

Yep. The government building I worked, HMRC, had several postcodes depending on which department the mail was for.

Up until recently on my motorbike i did and put it in the transparent pocket of my tank bag. Just got my first motorbike with satnav, though would still do that on my old bikes

If you've got a smartphone there's absolutely no need for a Satnav, just install the free Waze app. ..far far better than Google maps, with traffic, real time speed traps, road hazards (pot holes, broken down cars etc) all for free.

I tried putting my phone in my tank bag and found it too small too read.......may be my age.

Had my second Garmin for 10 years now with full European and North America maps. Bought for a Florida trip and buying it was the same price as renting one from the car hire company. (Before it was common for hire cars to have them built in).
Have free lifetime map updates. It's pretty good but has taken us on a few erroneous routes in France with the caravan on the back which were less than ideal. We normally have an AA atlas on holiday in France and my wife keeps an eye on it and has an idea of where we need to be heading and will sometimes 'over rule' the sat nav.

I've got a Garmin that must be getting on for 8-years-okd now. It does seem to have a "learn" feature where it steers you more onto minor routes/back lanes if you drive a lot of them (hard not to if you live where I do).
I think it helps if you do a reset of all the history events and clear the data (it's in the menu on the unit in settings I think).

i have tomtom normally brilliant but it takes me left at roundabout in to an industrial estate instead of right to housing estate in peterlee and down a bridleway up near durham

otherwise tomtom go subscription. both have proper traffic, proper vehicle selection options and a proper hgv mode.

Garmin took us through the middle of Sheffield in a nearly new Scout bus we'd borrowed for the weekend.

Also seemed very slow at directions often after where we were due to turn off.

Not the best!.

Think I'll get a Quadlock case and windscreen mount for my S20..

Waze is as bad as google maps for not allowing you to specify what your driving, so it avoids narrow roads or low bridges.

That's going to be people in the minority, I should clarify that Waze provides good general navigation but not for RV users, however I've been using it for years and it doesn't tend to send you down country lanes unless that's where your destination lies.
