Three position switch

Need some help to find a decent switch for my ring roller

I have a motor with gearbox with two black and two red wires, I can't remember how I did it but using a multimeter I figured it out and I have wired it to a 4pdt switch, like this

Problem is the switch is way too small and poor quality. It works, I can control left-right but occasionally/often it shorts itself.

I'd like a rotary switch ie turn to the left to move anti clockwise and to the right to move the roller clockwise.

Can someone help me find a switch that will work? It's a single phase motor, ~240v. Don't want to spend a fortune but I am in a hurry so I may have to.

This is what I want to use, but everything I can find seems to be 690v or 550v or something ridiculous.

The voltage just means what it can cope with, it doesn't matter if you only run it on 12V

Thats what it's rated to, you can use it on your 230V - the problem would be if it's lower. You'll find most decent quality ones will be rated at least 440 or more as that's industrial 3 phase voltage.

I run a 20amp one like the Amazon link on my invertor. I just use it as a diverter/controller so I can run my 2 post and 4 post ramp on the same invertor. It diverter the power to the other motor but I am also using one of the contacts to operate a different program so it means the motors one each ramp can run at different speeds.

You'd have to draw out what you currently have and double check with the switch, but generally as long as you have enough contacts then it should work.

I threw my sketch in the bin after I wired the first one up and it worked I'll do another quickly

It has 12 terminals and I just figured it out with the multimeter, which wires needed to be live for the motor to go in which direction. I can figure that out again no problem.

This is how the current switch is wired up

When the toggle is switched one way the middle row is closed with top row and the other way closed with the bottom row.

If you are using all 4 poles then something like this would be needed. The original I linked to was only 3 pole...

Tyre machines do exactly the same thing using a rotary switch. What is common on them is to leave a common wire permanently connected and switch the ones that control the direction. I went through this converting one from 3ph to 1ph, caused a bit of head scratching till I realised how they did it. I did notice that when I pushed the pedal partly it was possible to get a partial connection which caused the motor to hum. I just assumed it was because of my conversion but I now have a 1ph unit that came from the factory like that and it does the same thing.

That's got 16 terminals, I'm only using twelve at present?

Wiring diagram on the data sheet shows 12 - 4 pole double throw.

Sometimes the picture is a generic type, where they have multiple configurations of the same "type"

Ordered the 4 pole version from Amazon yesterday. Arrived this afternoon and wired it up. Works perfectly. Just need to make an enclosure for it now
