Cycle Frame Repair

I have a steel frame to repair it is 735 steel.
Clean break in the nain tube .
I have cut it and sleeved it with some seamless chrome alloy tube .
This a really good sliding fit.
I was going to TIG braze it .
Would silver solder be a better option .
I think the rest of the frame has been silver soldered.
I don't want to get it up to welding temp .

I think that's 753 John. Looks like a Paul Donohue frame. 753 was not supposed to be welded most were silver soldered..it's a heat treated tube and brazing is too hot and it loses strength.

Went up to where I used to work to get rid of some scrap metal in the appropriate skip which stood next to a skip marked "fly tipping", stuff dumped in forest gateways, into which a complete mountain bike had been put !. Looked almost new , why anyone would throw it away is beyond me . The chain was rusty but the rest seemed perfect.

Oh. My. God.

I must have missed that, first time round. People were literally begging him for his address so they could send him bike parts rather than let him weld aly parts with a stick welder!

My favourite response from a bemused and deluded GeorgeB was:

in view of all the sceptics and doubters, I used part of my old bike frame - the bit just under the saddle - to make a garden tool. I simply flattened out the tube and then butt (arc) welded it to a piece of mild steel plate. The hoe has been in use countless times and I often use it like a pick-axe to break up the soil. The weld shows no sign whatsoever of breaking so I suggest it bodes well for arc welding a bicycle frame.
