Safely transporting gas?

I knackered the seat in the Golf V5 i had when a piece of 300 x 300 box section i had laid across the back seats slid forward when i braked hard coming back from the yard. It snapped the mounts clean off the passenger seat, I had it on ebay at the time and when i got home, found it had sold.
Pi55er - so i got someone to hold it in the correct place and welded it back together. Must have passed the mot cos i saw it recently!

No typo Weldequip, As the acetylene is disolved in acetone as soon as the cylinder is erect the liquid finds its own level and the gas evaporates off when the valve is opened.
As I'm sure you're aware acetylene can only be used at the rate it can evaporate from the acetone which is temperature dependent.
It can take up to several hours to charge an acetylene cylinder as the gas has to be condensed into the acetone, again temperature dependent. W/A

Are you saying W/A that you can use an acetylene cylinder immediately, once vertical?

BOC would disagree. I quote:- "If an acetylene cylinder has been transported horizontally, place it upright for as long as possible before using any gas: best results will be obtained by leaving the cylinder in an upright position for 12 hours."

I assume this is because the acetone/acetylene is held in the internal packing(kapok etc), and takes a while to level out, leaving the ullage clear for the acetylene re-gasify out of the acetone solution. Otherwise there remains the risk of pulling acetone/acetylene out of the cylinder.

btw the "ullage" is the clear unfilled space left at the top of the cylinder when filling occurs.

The AP cylinder safety course will tell you not to lay them down at all, unless there is no other option.
But in no circumstances must the cylinder then be used for at least 12 hours after being stood up.

Thats how it is, 12 hours, not 30 mins.

Well, I stand corrected but through many years of using oxy-acetylene I have not had a problem and I'm sure 'leaving it to stand' did not appear in my City & Guilds course notes back in 1968!

I would be interested to know exactly what happens during standing. Any BOC men out there? W/A
