He was lucky. I saw a documentary where they were interviewing some of those who took part and some of them were under orders "No prisoners for the first 48 hours". Brutal but you wouldn't want to tie up soldiers on guard duty when you're fighting to establish a beach head.Years ago I met a German guy who was defending. He said watching the invasion force coming was terrifying. They knew they couldn't stop it.

This. And that the whole thing was done in secret. It's staggering.The sheer logistics of it all is staggering. No computers or mobile phones to assist. Paper, pencils and maps used to arrange it all. I find it mind-boggling.
