Post Knocker build

Here’s my post knocker build, the pics can tell it better than I can. Its all made from metal from about the place, apart from a couple of 25mm thick pieces at the hammer point. I first started with the 3 point linkage frame.




That was quite straight forward, I had a H girder in the yard It was all a bit hit and miss so that got chopped at 12 foot ,it actually stayed at 12 foot.


The top swing are, I made some bushing on the swing arm at the pivot point, and fitted a grease nipple.


The pullies I used are the Bradbury 4 post lift double pullies and pins, I lathed out the centres for the rope guides.

When it came to making there hammer weight, I uses a large core drill and cut it to where I could get maximum weight, Its heavy, don’t ask how heavy, I put in some heavy gauge steel offcuts, then I melted in the furnace a lot of lead father had from his fishing days, that filled it to just over ¾ height then added more heavy gauge steel and topped it off with concrete. Its approx 12inch across and approx 14-16 inches high, I had to use the fork lift to move it in the end.



After I made the strike plate, which takes the pounding rather than the top of the post I gave it a bit of paint.


With the rope I fist used 25mm rope


but forgot once it was plated where the eyelet is, it made it to thick on the pulley so I then used 16mm rope, spot on.
Once that was assemble I then turned to the hydraulics, I had a single lever control valve from the old dumper, which is now the forklift, It was double acting but with the return pipe tapped into the main flow return it lifted and dropped well.




Its fist test was knocking in 8 foot tall 4 inch thick fence posts, it drove them in with ease to six foot high. To see how much it would drive in I cut a 9 foot post from a telegraph pole, I did make a pilot hole with a 4 inch post but it drove the telegraph post in 3 foot and could have kept going.


The only thing father didn't like, was having to adjust the plum with the side winder or the top link. I then decided to have have a go at making it hydraulic side tilt and front and back tilt. I picked up a couple of second hand rams, of the auction site

Luckily a mate had a 2 lever hydraulic valve which matched the valve I already had.



The one I had was a Husco Owen casting number is 3311 and the one I got off my mate is a Husco Owen casting number 3112 plus it a single and a double acting one. How lucky is that.
I fixed the 2 lever valve next to the single lever valve and plumed it in it orks a treat.


I did have a top link eye which I have welded on to the ram I need to get another one for the other end yet


I do have to get a few hoses next week but just to test it, today I nicked them of other implement’s about the place,. It now tilts left and right and tilts forwards and back.

While I am waiting on hoses I will put a bit of paint on the new rams and fixings. All in all a great bit of kit and It didn’t take a lot of money, the hoses where the main cost, and it didn’t take lot of time to build, plus fathers well chuffed.

I do have a couple I will try and see if I can load them somehow onto youtube I keep loosing my codes to get onto my site though so it may take a few day to find lol

I am hopefully next week, if I have time gonna make a rock spike, basically a spike you drive in the ground making a pilot hole. I have some drilling tubes that are 10mm thick.


I am going to use 2 screw them together then weld them turn a piont on a block of steal I have.

Then I will need something across the top or a few inches down so I can pull it out of the ground with the fork lift. Hopefully it will be perfect for driving in telegraph pole gate posts.

Finally found my signing in to youtube. Here a short vid of father testing the knocker unfortunately he couldn't wait for the slap plate and just drove the weight onto the post. Once he had the slap plate with the holding spikes fitted he realised how important it was. There are a few more refinements to do, for instance I may have to open the port hole on the top link ram as it is a bit slow, but father likes it slow, I need to fit a compact 90 fitting on the main pivot arm as the hose could foul the roof.
